Teays Valley High School's Esports Team: A New Era in Competition
By Jacob Merideth, Traffic Light Sports Beat Writer
Teays Valley High School has officially entered the thriving world of esports, providing students with an exciting chance to compete against other schools in a variety of video games. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Tony Costa, a business and technology teacher at TVHS, who has taken on the role of leading the program in its inaugural year. As head coach, Costa brings his expertise and passion to the team, shaping the future of esports at Teays Valley High School."
According to Costa, the idea of starting an esports team at Teays Valley had been in the works for some time, with strong student interest and administrative support. "There was a lot of student interest and the administration was fully bought in," Costa explained. "They fully understood all the benefits of providing this opportunity for students."
The team's roster consists of 30 players competing in seven different games: Overwatch, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart, and Valorant. Costa noted that the team's diverse range of players has helped to create a positive and inclusive team culture.
In terms of training and practice, each game has a designated day of the week, with players competing against other schools in Ohio. Costa emphasized the importance of teamwork, communication, and strategy in esports competitions.
Esports has also had a positive impact on students' academic performance, according to Costa. "Esports has definitely influenced students to work harder academically," he said. "Students must be enrolled in five, 1-credit courses, have over a 1.5 GPA, and attend school on match days."
As the team looks to the future, Costa is focused on building a more competitive program. "Now that I have a year under my belt, I'm really going to hone in on making sure my teams are organized in the most reliable way possible," he said. Costa also expressed his ambition for the team to compete for state titles in every game.
The esports team's success is not limited to the virtual arena. Costa noted that the program has helped to create friendships and a sense of community among players. "My biggest takeaway and proudest moment are seeing these players laugh and have fun together," he said.
As Teays Valley High School's esports program continues to grow and evolve, it is clear that it has already made a positive impact on the school community. With Costa's leadership and the team's dedication, the future of esports at TVHS looks bright.
The Teays Valley Vikings' esports program is set to compete in the regional Rocket League tournament on April 6th at Ohio University. Good luck to team members Tim Salyers, James Fooce, Jon Leland, and Matt Diaz-Hatfield!

Quarterback Showdown:

Both signal-callers have had impressive seasons, with Howard throwing for 3,454 yards and 28 touchdowns and Leonard rushing for 934 yards and 14 touchdowns while throwing for 2,634 yards and 20 touchdowns. On the other hand, it's clear that Riley Leonard had a much more impressive rushing season in 2024, with over 5 times as many rushing yards as Will Howard. Leonard's average yards per carry were also significantly higher, at 5.2 compared to Howard's 1.9.
Riley Leonard (2024): 167 carries, 866 yards, 5.2 average, 16 touchdowns, 50 long

Prediction:

Score Prediction: Ohio State 28, Notre Dame 17
The Buckeyes' ability to control the clock and maintain possession, combined with their strong passing game, may prove too much for the Fighting Irish to handle. On the other hand, Notre Dame's rushing offense could keep the game close, and their passing defense might limit Ohio State's scoring opportunities. Ultimately, this championship game is expected to be a thrilling matchup between two of the nation's top teams. Will Ohio State's passing game and rushing defense lead them to victory, or will Notre Dame's rushing offense and passing defense propel them to the championship title?

Stay tuned for week 10 action and see what the final week gifts us!
My notes (which mean nothing):
The ranking respects the OCC schedule; potentially (close your ears, Vikings), Logan would jump to #10 and clinch a playoff birth with a win Friday, and with a loss to Logan, Teays Valley would stay put at #7. All of the Chief's losses come to Pick Central, who is the division champs, and Canal, who is second in the OCC; both teams are play-off bound and hosting a home game on 11/1.

OCC Buckeye Division Football Friday Night Week 9 Recap and Week 10 Preview
Week 9 Recap:
The OCC Buckeye Division saw thrilling matchups on Friday, October 18. Here's a brief recap:
Canal Winchester edged Lancaster 27-24 in a nail-biter. The Golden Gales gave the Indians all they could handle but would eventually shut down Lancaster. Canal has a date with Groveport on Saturday at 2 PM.
Groveport dominated Logan 41-6. Cruiser pushed the chiefs to retreat back to Hocking Hills and pull out a dominating win over the purple and white, only allowing 6 points in the second quarter.
Newark secured a hard-fought 21-20 victory over Reynoldsburg. The Wildcats are having their best season in almost 10 years. Quarterback Bodie Smith moved into second for the school single-season record for touchdown passes. He is just six passes shy of the school record set last year.
Pickerington Central's potent offense proved to be too much for Teays Valley. The Vikings gave the purple men all they could handle going into the locker rooms as they were down a touchdown and a two-point conversion at half 28-20 against the Tigers, but Pickerington Central would pull away in the second half on a 98-yard kickoff return to eventually pull away from the feisty Vikings.
Week 10 Preview:
As the regular season nears its conclusion, the OCC Buckeye Division gears up for another exciting week of matches on Friday, October 25.
Groveport (5-4, 3-3) at Canal Winchester (7-2, 5-1): Groveport aims to upset Canal Winchester, who seeks to solidify their second-place standing. The Indians have clinched a home playoff game and a home game on November 1st.
Lancaster (3-6, 1-5) at Newark (6-3, 3-3): Lancaster looks to rebound from a loss against Canal and hand Newark an under .500 OCC record in Buckeye division play.
Reynoldsburg (4-5, 3-3) at Pickerington Central (7-2, 6-0): Reynoldsburg faces a daunting task against undefeated division leader Pickerington Central; the Tigers secure the outright Buckeye title with a win.
Teays Valley (5-4, 3-3) at Logan (1-8, 0-6)*: Teays Valley seeks to bounce back from last week's loss against struggling Logan. The Vikings clinched a home playoff game per Joe Eitel but are hungry for their 6th win on the season; the last Teays 6 win season was in 2022. The Chieftains are seeking their first-ever OCC.
Key Storylines:
Can Groveport's offense keep pace with Canal Winchester's high-powered attack?
Will Newark's defense contain Lancaster's offense and secure a winning record in the OCC?
Can Reynoldsburg pull off a massive upset against division-leading Pickerington Central?
Will Teays Valley rebound against Logan and pick up their sixth win of the season?
Tune in on Friday, October 25, as the OCC Buckeye Division teams clash in the penultimate week of the regular season.

Reds Hire Terry Francona as New Manager
In a shocking move, the Cincinnati Reds have announced that Terry Francona will be their new manager, according to sources close to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Francona, a veteran skipper with a storied career, comes out of retirement just one year after stepping away from the Cleveland Guardians.
Francona's Return to the Dugout:
After leading the Guardians to multiple postseason appearances, including an American League pennant in 2016, Francona surprisingly stepped down as manager following the 2022 season. Citing health concerns and a desire to spend time with family, Francona's retirement was thought to be permanent.
However, the Reds' vacant managerial position has lured Francona back into the game. His wealth of experience, leadership skills, and proven track record make him an ideal fit for a Cincinnati team looking to rebound from a disappointing season.
Francona's impressive resume:
With over 20 years of managerial experience, Francona boasts an impressive resume:
2x World Series Champion (Boston Red Sox, 2004 & 2007)
3x American League Manager of the Year
1,629 career wins (.532 winning percentage)
What This Means for the Reds:
Francona's hiring signals a new era of competitiveness for the Reds. His expertise and guidance will be invaluable in shaping the team's young core and revitalizing the franchise.
