TVHS Boys basketball at Northland 2/24
Teays Valley's Season Comes to a Close with Tough Loss to Northland
The Teays Valley Vikings' season came to an end on Monday night, as they fell to the No. 4 seeded Northland Vikings 77-36 in the Central District tournament.
Northland started strong, taking a 16-10 lead after the first quarter. A three-pointer from Jayden Morrison brought the score to 26-17 in favor of Northland midway through the second, but the hosts quickly pulled away. Jaden Shoultz hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark an 18-3 run, giving Northland a 44-20 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was more of the same, with Northland outscoring Teays 15-6 in the first five minutes. A basket from Teays’ Hayden McCray was followed by a three-pointer from Northland's Nehemiah McMorris, and the rout was on. With two minutes left in the quarter, Tejaun Barbour sunk a free throw to put Northland up 35 points, 63-28, and start a running clock.
Northland's dominance continued in the fourth quarter, with the Vikings finishing the night with three players in double-figure scoring. Shoultz led the way with 23 points, including six three-pointers, while McMorris added 20 points and Diante James chipped in with 10.
Teays, on the other hand, struggled to find its footing on offense. Tanner Smith was the team's top scorer with eight points, but no other player reached double figures. The green and gold’s defense was stifling, holding the blue and golds leading scorer, Brody Fields, to just one made shot in the first quarter and a single free throw in the fourth. Fields finished his junior campaign with 1,177 points, which is good for 3rd all-time in Teays Valley boys' basketball history.
Teays Valley coach Brian Barnett praised his team's effort, despite the tough loss. "I felt like our guys battled all night long," he said. "We continued to show good energy and patience throughout most of the game. Northland is very athletic and talented. Their size posed some problems for us along with their transition game."
Barnett reflected on the season, saying, "It was a tough season. Coming off back-to-back league championships, I thought throughout the year that our kids did a great job of sticking together. The players' perseverance and the true character of the kind of players that we have here at Teays Valley really shined bright."
Barnett noted that the team's schedule was particularly tough this season, with the second-hardest schedule in Division 2 in the state. "Our players are resilient," he said. "We will take some time off and then get back to preparing for the '25-'26 season."
Barnett also praised the leadership of the team's four seniors. "I can't say enough about the leadership that our four seniors showed this season," he said. "They did a great job of keeping our guys together. No one wants their senior season to go the way it went. But day in and day out, those four brought every and effort to everything we did."
Northland also controlled the boards, outrebounding Teays 32-15. James led the way with 10 rebounds, while Owan Mburugu added seven and McMorris chipped in with six. Smith was Teays Valley's top rebounder with four.
The loss brings an end to Teays Valley boy basketball season, which saw the team finish with a 2-21 record. Northland, meanwhile, advances to the district title game, where they will face No. 2 seeded New Albany on Sunday at The State Fairground’s Taft Coliseum.

District Semi-Final Preview: Vikings Clash in Columbus 2/24
The stage is set for a Vikings vs. Vikings showdown in the district semi-finals, as Northland High School will host Teays Valley on Monday, February 24, 2025.
The Northland Vikings (18-3) enter the game riding a 14-game winning streak in conference play, while Teays Valley (2-20) has struggled to find consistency this season, with just two wins on the year. Ranked 20th in the state, Northland boasts impressive team statistics, including 65.0 points per game, 31.7 rebounds per game, 12.4 assists per game, 10.7 steals per game, and 3.2 blocks per game.
Led by Owan Mburugu's 7.1 rebounds per game and Diante James' 5.0 assists per game and 3.4 steals, Northland has dominated conference opponents, going 14-0 against league foes. The Vikings' schedule has been highlighted by strong performances against Worthington Christian, Columbus International, Mifflin, and Whetstone.
In contrast, Teays Valley's schedule has been marked by a challenging season, with the team going 2-20 overall. Despite picking up wins over Canal Winchester and Logan Elm, the Vikings have struggled to sustain momentum, dropping games to several opponents, including Hamilton Township, Olentangy, Lancaster, and Reynoldsburg.
A look at the record breakdown reveals the Vikings in the green and golds dominance, with an 18-3 overall record and a perfect 14-0 record in conference play. The Vikings captured their third straight City League title on February 15th, led by sophomore forward Owan Mburugu's game-high 22 points. The Vikings donning the blue and gold, on the other hand, hold a 2-20 overall record and a 1-13 record in conference play, falling to Logan on Friday. Brody Fields led the game with 22 points.
The winner of tonight's game will advance to face the winner of New Albany and Dublin Scioto in the district finals, with a trip to the Taft Coliseum at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus on March 2 on the line.

Barnett emphasized the importance of taking care of the basketball on offense and being fundamentally sound on defense. "We need to play well in order to win," he said. "The guys have had a great two days of practice leading up to tomorrow night. I look for them to come out with a lot of energy. It will be a great night of high school basketball."
The Vikings (2-16, 1-10) will face off against the hosting Wildcats (16-3, 9-2) on Friday.
Teays Valley Wrestling Team Dominates Early Season Competition 1/30
The Teays Valley wrestling team has been on a tear, boasting a perfect 5-0 record in the early season. Led by a strong lineup and determined coaching staff, the Vikings have asserted themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the league in their first year as members.
Teays Valley has racked up an impressive string of victories, starting in December, with a 52-24 win over Lancaster and a 64-5 handling of Newark on December 12. They followed that up with a 64-18 triumph over Reynoldsburg on December 19. On January 9, the Vikings secured a 65-9 victory over Groveport, and on January 16, they edged out Canal Winchester 50-21, bringing their total league wins to five.
According to TV Coach Todd Nace, the key to the team's success lies in their hard work and dedication. "The kids have worked hard all year, and I think the off-season workouts have really paid off," Nace said. "Our coaches are very good at getting the kids up for big matches, and I think we'll be peaking at the right time."
Nace emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, stating, "Our goal for the team is to get better every week. If we do that, we'll win the next two duals and win the OCC."
With their sights set on a league championship, Teays Valley is ready to put their skills to the test. The upcoming dual against Pickerington Central on February 6 will be particularly special, as it will be Senior Night for the team's five seniors.
"We're very excited for the seniors, and we'd like to send them out with an OCC title and a great postseason," Nace said.

TVHS boys basketball vs Newark 1/10
"Newark Holds Off Teays Valley for 71-49 Win"
Ashville-In a rare all-varsity boys and girls basketball doubleheader at Teays Valley High School, the Vikings boys basketball team put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell to Newark, 71-49, on Thursday.
Teays Valley Boys trailed 26-23 at halftime, despite an 18-8 run fueled by Brody Fields' 14 second-quarter points. However, Newark pulled away in the second half, outscoring Teays Valley Boys 45-26 behind the scoring of Braylon Morris and Jake Quakenbush, who combined for 36 points.
Fields led Teays Valley Boys with 24 points, including 12-17 from the free-throw line, and five rebounds. Tanner Smith added 7 points, Owen Hoffhines chipped in with 5 points, and Jayden Morrison knocked down multiple three-pointers, finishing with 6 points. The team shot an impressive 8-11 (73%) from beyond the arc. Newark's balanced attack was led by Quakenbush and Morris, who each scored 18 points. Ty Gilbert added 14 points, while Ty Brooks chipped in with 10 points.
Teays Valley (2-8, 1-4) will continue OCC-Buckeye play by hosting Pickerington Central on Tuesday, January 14. Newark will travel to Summit Road to face Reynoldsburg on the same day.
Coach's thought:
"We struggled offensively out of the gate, getting good looks but unable to convert. However, in the second quarter, our defense did a great job of forcing Newark into tough jump shots, preventing them from getting easy baskets. Our guys showed resilience in digging out of an early hole to stay within striking distance at halftime. Unfortunately, Newark's execution was very good in the second half, and we struggled to get stops on defense. I'm proud of our team's fight, but we can't afford to give a talented team like Newark a significant lead. Credit to Newark—they excel at executing in the half court." - TV Coach Brian Barnett

TVHS Boys Basketball vs. Hilliard Darby
"Fields' 22 Not Enough in Vikings' Loss as Hilliard Darby Holds Off Teays Valley's Late Surge”
Teays Valley’s' quest for their first win continues after Hillard Darby roars to a 58-48 win over the reeling Vikings Tuesday night. The game began with a tightly contested first quarter, ending in an 8-8 tie. Hilliard Darby snatched momentum in the second with two Ty Maul threes, outscoring Teays Valley 19-14 in the quarter. The Panthers maintained their lead in the third, captained by Alex Perie’s 9 points in the period. Maul dropped 7 points in the fourth to seal the win for the visiting Darby Panthers.

Ty Maul's dominant 25-point performance led Hilliard Darby's offense. Kade Romine contributed 18 points, while Alex Perie chipped in 12. Rounding out the Panthers' scoring was Cooper Gilkerson with three points.
The Vikings (0-4, 0-1) travel to Reynoldsburg on Friday for OCC-Buckeye action, while Hilliard Darby (2-0, 1-0) faces Dublin Jerome in OCC-Cardinal play.
Coach’s Thought:
"I thought our kids played hard, and they battled. Our kids are working really hard, and I know things just aren't going our way right now. It's a bounce here, a bounce there, an offensive rebound, a defensive rebound. Give our kids a lot of credit; they're trying; they're battling. We talk to them about the light and the prize that's at the end, and that's something we will continue to work for. We've got another tough one on Friday, but we're on to prepare just like we prepare for the next team. We've got a little bit of history against them; we've got some video on them. I fully expect to go over there and win. But we prepare our kids for the next two days and jump on the bus on Friday; it's going to be our time sometime; I just don't know when that time is, but once we get there and that time happens, I think that road is going to take off, and the sky is going to be the limit for these guys. From game one to game four, we've gotten better every game. The scoreboard hasn't said that I know, but we have gotten better in little things that we've done, and that's what I'm looking for," said TV Coach Brian Barnett.
Box Score:

Teays Valley Volleyball Falls to Big Walnut, Concludes Season with Pride
Teays Valley volleyball wrapped up its season with a hard-fought, three-set match against Big Walnut. Despite the loss, the Vikings showcased their growth and improvement.
Coach Amy Horsley noted that the team had "their best week of practice," honing skills like hitting, coverage, serve receive, serving, blocking, and tooling the block. Film review and strategic planning paid off, but early nerves hindered their start.
Big Walnut took an early 7-1 lead in the first set, capitalizing on Teays Valley's four hitting errors and sluggish defense. A timeout helped settle the Vikings, who battled back but couldn't overcome their mistakes. The second set began promisingly, with Teays Valley jumping to an 8-1 lead behind solid hitting and aggressive serving. However, Big Walnut rallied, exploiting the Vikings' serve-receive struggles.
Statistically, the disparity was stark:
Team hitting percentage: Teays Valley 4.4%, Big Walnut 22.1%
Serve receive rating: Teays Valley 1.52
Serve-receive attempts: 69 (38 poor passes/errors)
Aces: Teays Valley 8, Big Walnut 8
Serve percentage: Teays Valley 89.8%, Big Walnut 94.5%
Errors: Teays Valley 42, Big Walnut 29

Brianna Helser (5 kills, 2 aces, .333 hitting percentage)
Ellie Tatman (12/16 serve receive, 11 digs, 4 aces, 1 assist)
Ella Miles (6/6 serving, 1 ace, 1 dig)
Post-game reflections highlighted the seniors' positive impact, strong schedule, and mental growth. Team captain Jenna Pence emphasized, "This group of girls has created a legacy for Teays Valley volleyball." Our record doesn't define the impact we've had on this program."
The Vikings concluded the season with a 7-16 overall record (4-10 OCC Buckeye), demonstrating remarkable development—mentally, physically, and skill-wise.

Coaches thoughts:
We had a great season of golf for the boys. Anytime you can win a league championship is good and put it together with a bunch of great players. It made the season very enjoyable. I think that one of the reasons for our success this year was the fact that seniors Caden Sherman and Carter Hutchison were very active in getting everyone together this summer to play. They did a great job of making sure our younger players were involved in everything we did. Both of those young men had a great senior season. I know they are a little disappointed right now, coming off of the sectional tournament. However, when the dust settles and they have time to reflect on the past season, they will understand just how good it was. The play of sophomore Noah Hilgenberg was the anchoring force to a team that needed that person who could go low on any given day. You look at how much time and effort those three young men put into their golf games this summer and you will see why we won the first OCC Championship in school history. Add in the play of Freshman Trent Hicks and Will Griffith, who were both big contributors in OCC play. Both of our freshmen gained valuable experience and learned a great deal from the upperclassmen. Coming in and making a varsity team as a freshman is tough to do; these two have very bright futures ahead for the Vikings. We graduate five senior golfers this year: Caden Sherman, Carter Hutchison, Vinnie Multon, Vance Hanger, and Branson Crabtree. Returning to the Viking golf team next year will be Noah Hilgenberg, Will Griffith, and Trent Hicks. When you take a look at our JV team, we have some talented players who will push for varsity time next season. I believe that the depth we have created this season—18 players on the golf roster—will allow us to be very competitive in the league and the central district next year.
Historic Achievement:
This championship marks Teays Valley's first OCC title in their inaugural season, a testament to the team's dedication, skill, and adaptability.
Congratulations to Teays Valley and Reynoldsburg on their outstanding co-championship achievement!

TVHS Girls Golf Team Makes Strides in Inaugural OCC Season 10/1
The 2024 OCC Buckeye Division girl's golf season was one for the books, especially for Teays Valley High School. In their inaugural season, the Vikings showed remarkable improvement, finishing second with an 11-5 record.
Canal Winchester dominated the division, finishing undefeated at 16-0. Their consistency and skill were unmatched, with scores of 353, 344, 169, and 365.
However, Teays Valley's progress stole the show. Starting with a 385 in the first round, they steadily improved:
Round 1: 385
Round 2: 370
Round 3 (9 holes): 196
Round 4: 412
Their dedication and hard work paid off, earning them a respectable second-place finish.
Lancaster (9-7) and Pickerington Central (4-12) trailed behind, while Logan struggled to find momentum (0-16). Newark didn't field a full team.
Teays Valley's breakout season sets the stage for future success. With their impressive improvement, they're poised to become a force to be reckoned with in the OCC Buckeye Division.
“This year had its challenges with the pressure of joining the OCC; however, the girls kept their heads down and were determined to succeed within this new division. At the beginning of the year, the girls posted one of their highest team scores but worked very hard to improve. This was very evident as they posted their lowest team score the next week and beat the previous score by 95 strokes. I would like to highlight all of the players, as everyone contributed to this great season by placing second in the OCC. Additionally, I would like to mention the following players, as their consistent scores and positive attitudes made this possible. These players consist of Adison Abele, Makinna Pinion, and Brooklynn Lowry. Moving into next season, we are looking forward to building the team back up with hopes to be OCC champions,” says TV girls golf coach Jeff Rush.
The Vikings' season ended at Sectionals.

TVHS Volleyball vs. Chillicothe 9/9

"We served more aggressively last night and finished with 16 aces and a serving percentage of 95.8%," said Horsley. Ella Miles had a perfect serve and receive night, with 5 aces and 10 digs. "Ella played one of her best games of the season, and I was excited for our team to beat Chillicothe and win our 'Spike Out Cancer' game." "This game was also important to Coach Caudill because her parents are currently battling breast cancer and leukemia." The team raised $922 through online donations and at least $500 through a basket raffle, all of which will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Added Horsley

TV volleyball vs. Canal Winchester 9/5
The Teays Valley volleyball team was on the court against Canal Winchester for an OCC matchup and would lose in four sets to the Indians, 17-25, 21-25, 25-20, 20-25.
“We started off not in a very uncharacteristic way, not playing well at all. We were simply struggling on both defense and offense, and I felt like we simply weren’t ready to play. We were letting balls hit the court and not communicating. I called a timeout and told the girls that I was fine if we lost as long as we played hard and gave our best effort, and we needed to play hard at least. They did fight back after that, but it wasn’t enough to get out of the deep hole we dug early in the set. We played better in the second set, and then we were able to start off strong and play more consistently to win the third set. We told the girls after the game that this was a good loss that we could learn from because they battled and didn’t give up or quit playing.
Brianna Helser finished with a team-high of 11 kills, and Aubrey Helser had her best game of the season, finishing with 5 kills. Tessa Bradley played a great game with 19 assists and 11 digs, and Ellie Tatman continues to play consistently and lead on defense. She had 33/34 serve-receive passes, 14 digs, 4 assists, and she was 1/1 hitting and excited to get a kill. I was very proud of her (Brianna) for her decision-making and versatility as a hitter. She placed the ball more effectively last night and used more “tools” in her “hitting toolbox.” She has worked hard in practice to adjust her shoulders when approaching the ball, and I was very proud of her for how she played last night.”
The stat book for the Vikings was Ellie Tatman with a 33/34 serve receive, 14 digs, 4 assists, and 1 kill. Ella Miles had 17/19 serving with 2 aces, 17/20 serve receive, and 11 digs. Tessa Bradley added 19 assists, 11 digs, and 13/14 serving with 2 aces. Emma Minton contributed 14 assists, 6 digs, and 18/19 serving with 1 ace. 11 kills, 2 blocks, and 4 digs for Brianna Helser, Jenna Pence had 8 kills, 2 blocks, and 4 digs. Allie Carte was credited with 7 kills. Aubrey Helser got 5 kills and 2 blocks. Noa Craft was written down for 5 kills. Ella McGee: 2 kills, 4 blocks, and 2 digs Brenna Carothers rounded out the scorebook with 9 digs, 2 aces, and 1 kill.
Coaches Thoughts: Our serve-receive rating was again lower last night with 1.52 compared to Canal’s 1.74. Serve, receive was a huge issue, especially in the first set. We struggled from the beginning, and it affected our setters and offense too. We made improvements throughout the night, but we have to be more consistent and win the serve-receive game more. Our hitting percentage was.129 compared to Canal's.204. Errors hurt us as we finished with several more than Canal did. Volleyball is a game of errors, and we must find a way to make fewer errors and produce more points. Consistency is something that we need to continue to improve to be able to compete with strong teams.
The Teays Valley volleyball team will be back in action on Monday for a nonleague matchup against Chillicothe, the game will be a spike for cancer game that raises money for the American Cancer Society

TV Boys XC
The Teays Valley boys cross country toed the line at the Westerville North Classic. Despite a week of dealing with the extreme heat, the boys locked in and were ready to race for this flat and fast race. The boys finished 17th out of 20 teams, and the Vikings will return to the same course for the OCC Championship race in October. Individual standouts on the day included Brayden Fraley and Colin Carvel leading the way for the Vikings, and Luke Little raced in the Open race.

TV girls XC
The Teays Valley Girls cross country team shot out of the gates Saturday for the Westerville North XC classic. Three of Teays' participants were a part of Teays Valley’s Golden Sound and performed at the football game Friday. The game was moved back due to the extreme heat, and it was an away game. Kate Charter, Lila Merritt, and Julie Charter all had reason to complain, but the XC staff said, “Whether it be exposure to heat, lack of sleep, or whatever valid reason that truly did exist, however, without a word, all three ladies showed up and showed out, and it was an example of toughness that was well respected.” Katy Zang raced her way to the front of the pack and stayed there; Reese Galinger and Addie Keplar worked as a duo and navigated their way through the Warriors course; Grace Thanasack is working hard and “looking to be dangerous as the season goes on,” say XC Country staff. This, combined with a strong team showing from the Vikings, helped them finish 3rd out of 18 teams.
The scorers for the Vikings were: Katy Zang 1st (17:18), Reese Galinger 12th (20:15), Addie Keplar 15th (20:25), Grace Thanasack 35th (21:20), Kate Charter 61st (22:15), Iris Ardrey 71st (22:40), and Claire Krouse 89th (23:20).

TVHS Volleyball vs. Groveport Madison 9/02
Teays Valley took their second OCC Buckeye Division win as they defeated Groveport Madison in three sets of 25-12, 25-18, and 25-19.
The Vikings would control the first set over the Crusiers; in the second set, Groveport pushed back a bit but lost the second. The red and black would score the third set's first four points, but after a Teays timeout, the Vikings took over and sent the Crusiers home in straight set fashion.
“I continue to be proud of the girls for playing through the rough moments on the court. Their mindset and resiliency continue to get stronger. In the third set, we got down 4-0 at the start as Groveport started with a point because I needed to write the libero and captain numbers on the lineup sheet with less than a minute left. We started poorly in serve receive, so we were quickly down 4-0. The girls fought back to regain the lead and win the set,” TV coach Amy Horsley said.
The Vikings were led by Ellie Tatman: 16 digs, 3 assists, 17/17 serving with 4 aces, 13/14 serving receive. Emma Minton: 12/12 serving with 1 ace, 16 assists, 2 digs Tessa Bradley-8/10 serving with 1 ace, 14 assists, 5 digs Jenna Pence: 14 kills, 3 blocks Ella McGee: 7 kills, 3 blocks, 2 digs, 1 ace Allie Carte: 6 kills, 8/9 serve receive, 4 digs Brianna Helser: 5 kills Noa Craft: 4 kills, 2 blocks Zoie Hall: 2 kills Aubrey Helser: 2 digs Katie Reynard, Brenna Carothers, and Ella Mileseach 5 digs. “ Jenna Pence continues to be a strong hitter for us, as she led the game with 14 kills. She has worked very hard and is focused during every practice. I love her mindset when things are not good enough in practice. For example, in a hitting drill, she might earn her 5th kill, but she will say, “That wasn’t good enough. I want another one.” Allie Carte has played consistently the past two games and finished with six kills. Emma Minton led the team with 16 assists and 12/12 serving. I noticed before the game that Emma had gotten our weighted setter ball out and was against the ball warming up. She is always asking for feedback from her hitters, and she asked immediately after the game what she could work on to improve. Emma is a player who lives for the game of volleyball, and it shows every single day in practice and games. Ellie Tatman led the team with 16 digs, 17/17 serving with 4 aces, 13 serve receive passes, and 3 assists. Ellie’s volleyball knowledge and communication on the court always help our team tremendously.” Coach Horsley said
Coaches' overall thoughts: We played very well in the first set to win 25-12, but we made many errors throughout the night. One of our main goals has been to produce more than 15 points and make less than 8 errors in each set. Last night we only made 4 hitting errors in the first set, and then we had at least 6 in both the second and third sets. In addition to the hitting errors, we also had some missed serves, shanked passes on serve receive, multiple net violations, and one out-of-rotation call against us. We made two more overall errors than Groveport did last night, but we still managed to produce more points and win. Our service was 93.9 compared to Groveport's 85.7%. Groveport won the serve-receive game with a 1.52 rating compared to our 1.50. Our team hitting % was 144, which needs to be higher. Our practice today will focus on serve receive and consistency and execution in hitting, as well as continuing to work on running different offenses. The girls are doing a great job of trying to run an actual offense right now, especially on free balls and perfect passes on serve receive, and I am excited to see that when it happens.
Tuesday was youth ball night, and the Vikings hosted their Teays Valley Youth Volleyball League members. “It was great to have some of our youth league players in the crowd tonight. I loved seeing the high school and youth league players together after the game. I encourage the girls to build a legacy, and youth league is a huge part of that. I think it is pretty special how much the youth league players look up to the older girls.” Horsley added

TVHS Volleyball vs. Watkins Memorial 8/31
Vikings volleyball battled the Warriors and won in 4 sets (23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21) for a Saturday non-league match over Watkins Memorial.
Teays lost the first set to Watkins on Saturday morning but were able to regain their focus and win the following three sets. “Our team was able to make plays when we needed to in order to win the match. I was proud of the girls for staying positive and finishing strong to be the first team to reach 25, which is the one that matters most. It wasn’t always pretty, but the girls are developing some grit and resilience, which are both necessary as we continue in our season. We have continued to improve at handling adversity on the court.” TV coach Amy Horsley said.
Teays Valley lost the receiving battle with Watkins; the Viking's rating was 1.69 compared to the Warrior's 2.15. “We continue to work on serve receive in every practice, and this is something we want to win every match. Our hitting percentage was lower on Saturday than it has been in previous games; we finished the game with an overall hitting percentage of.058, but this will continue to be a focus for our hitters, and we did win in the errors,” Horsley said. The Vikings had 49 errors compared to the Watkins' 64.
Leading the way for the Vikings were Brianna Helser with 9 kills and 4 blocks, Ella McGee had 7 kills with 2 blocks, Allie Carte collected 7 kills and 1 block, and Jenna Pence had 6 kills and 3 blocks. Noa Craft got 4 kills and 6 blocks. Ellie Tatman added 20 digs with a serve receive of 23/24; Ella Miles had 17 digs; Aubrey Helser had 1 kill and 4 blocks; Emma Minton had 17 assists, one ace, and 7 digs. Tessa Bradley gave out 12 assists, got 1 ace, and 8 digs; Brenna Carothers was credited with 6 digs. “Noa (Craft) had her best game of the season; she had 4 kills and a team-high 6 blocks and led the team in hitting percentage. I loved seeing her be aggressive and swing hard in the middle,” added Horsley.
Vikings were in action on 9/03 against OCC division mate Groveport. I will have a recap today (09/04).
Teays Valley volleyball at Reynoldsburg 8/29
The Teays Valley volleyball team hit the road and looted the Raiders as the Vikings would sweep Reynoldsburg in straight sets. 25-10, 25-19, 26-24
“We got a little bit sloppy in the second and third sets, and we made too many errors. With that said, I was extremely proud of our team in the third set. We were not playing well and were down by at least four points, so I called a timeout and made a substitution. The girls went out of the way with a different mindset, and they were able to regain their composure and refocus to come back and win the set 26-24. We have talked a lot lately about being able to handle when things get difficult on the court, and when we face adversity, we have talked about simply being able to play the entire set and finish. Our team was able to do that last night. We didn’t fall short; we actually came back from a deficit to win, and it was great to see the girls accomplish that. TV coach Amy Horsley said
Teays Valley controlled the first set handily, but in the second set the Raiders defeated the Vikings, and in the third set the purple and gold pushed the Teays to the brink and made it to a win-by-two situation, but the blue and gold would pull out the win in a 26-24 fashion. Leading the way for the Vikings was Jenna Pence, who had 12 kills, five digs, and three blocks. Brianna Helser had five kills and two blocks; Ella McGee stated 4 kills, and 2 blocks. Allie Carte put up 3 kills, Brenna Carothers had two kills and 10 digs, and Zoie Hall had two kills.
“I was very excited for our team for their strong performance in the first set. We started off playing very consistently and executed well to win the first set 25-10. We worked to run different offenses in practice on Wednesday, and it was wonderful to see the girls do this during the game. I challenged my setters to execute a “setter dump,” and Emma Minton accomplished that. Jenna Pence and Ella McGee were working together to run offenses we put in for free balls. Our players were aggressive and less predictable on offense.” Says Horsley
To highlight some performances from the game, “Ellie Tatman played another solid defensive game, and both setters, Emma Minton and Tessa Bradley, played great defense and connected with our hitters. Jenna Pence and Brianna Helser both hit the ball very well last night to lead the team in kills, and Brenna Carothers continues to be a consistent offensive and defensive player on the court, finishing with 2 kills and 10 digs,” Horsley added.
Teays Valley will be playing at home on Tuesday, September 3rd, against Groveport, and it will be youth league night. Teays Valley volleyball players have worked to help the youth volleyball run a league for grades K–8. They run practice on Wednesday nights and games on Sundays, and on Monday, September 9th, Teays Valley is holding a spike for cancer game that raises money for the American Cancer Society. “This is a game that means a lot to the players and me personally this year, as my mom was just diagnosed with cancer. It is something that proves to the girls that there are so many important things in the world and they can make a positive impact on other people and society.” Horsley said. This game will be against the Chillicothe Cavaliers.

TVHS boys soccer vs. Lancaster 8/29
Vikings boys soccer survived an early gust of wind and withstood the Lancaster Golden Gales 7-2 behind a hat trick from Max Spencer and Gavin Waters to pick up their first OCC Buckeye division win.
Lancaster scored early with 34:15 to go in the first when Eseqiuel Pereyra snuck a shot by the Vikings goaltender due to some congestion in the box. Two minutes later, Max Spencer roped a shot past the Lancaster goalie and tied the game up at 1-1. Spencer also connected with another one at 28:47 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Then three consecutive goals from Gavin Waters at 23:48, 7:07, and 4:41 to take the 5-1 lead into the half and give him yet another hat trick. It only took 10 minutes into the second half for Max Spencer to absorb contact and soft-roll a ball through the goalkeeper's legs to give him a hat trick with 30:59 to go in the second half. At 8:40, Lancaster junior Marcus Niceswanger buzzed a ball past the Teays Valley goalie to make the score 6-2. Teays junior Michael Williams scored late to extend the lead back to five and put a cap on the Vikings's 7-2 win and pick up Teays Valley boys soccer’s first division win as an OCC member.

TVHS Volleyball vs. Lancaster 8/27
The Lancaster Golden Gales came to Ashville and took Teays Valley to five sets and beat the Vikings in this first OCC divisional game (LHS-19-25,TV-25-10,TV-25-15,LHS-21-25,LHS-13-15)
“Our team showed much heart and put up a great fight. Of course, we are competitive and love to win, and losing a close game that I think we could have won is never fun, but with that said, we have also realized that there are more important things than winning. The girls stayed positive and showed a fight that we haven’t always had, and they worked through adversity and handled hard things, and the girls encouraged each other and worked together. There were so many positive things from the game. One of our goals has been to limit our mistakes and play more consistently, and for the most part, we were able to do that. We had 46 errors for the night compared to Lancaster’s 51. We finished with a better serve percentage, and we had a 95.1 compared to their 93.6.” Said TV coach Amy Horsley
Lancaster took the first set convincingly from Teays Valley 25-9, but the Vikings pushed back and dominated the second set as they came back from a 0-6 deficit and only allowed the Gales to score 4 more points to close out the set with a 25-10 victory. The third set was taken by the blue and gold, and then the fourth set was closely contested, but the Golden Gales beat the Vikings 25-21. Then in the fifth tiebreaker to 15, the Vikings would drop by two points, and Lancaster would win 15 to 13 and collect their first OCC division win. ”I was so proud of our team for the fight that they showed, especially in the second set. We got down 0-6, and I called a timeout. The girls returned to the court with a different mindset, focus, and determination. They played so efficiently and consistently that we gained momentum and never lost it that set. I keep telling the girls that they need to be confident because they have the skills they need to compete; we just have to continue to build the confidence, mindset, and heart set we need to play an entire match and fight through when we lose a point. We have to be able to stop the other team from going on a run.” Horsley said.
Teays Valley’s Ellie Tatman finished the night with 28/30 serve receptions, 25 digs, and 4 assists. Jenna Pence ended the night with 21 kills, a .313 hitting percentage, and two blocks, and Brianna Helser had a consistent night with 14 kills and a hitting percentage of.370. Sophomore setter Emma Minton finished with a team-high of 31 assists, 1 kill, and 4 digs. Tessa Bradley finished with 15 assists and 7 digs. Ella Miles junior finished with 15 digs, 22/22 serving, and 15/16 on serve receive, and Teays as a team finished with an overall hitting percentage of .190, higher than Lancaster’s .152.
“Jenna continues to progress and has a strong mentality and presence on the court, and it was great to see 7 out of 8 players with positive hitting percentages because one goal of ours was to be more aggressive and consistent in our attacks. The number of kills and our higher hitting percentages showed that we accomplished that goal. Brianna Helser was also very consistent with 14 kills and a hitting percentage of.370. Ellie (Tatman) continues to excel in every single game; she is a leader on the court as her communication helps all players on the court and is always reading the court and directing our hitters as they go up in their approach. Emma (Minton) hustles and works hard at practice every single day and is committed to this team and getting better and gives it everything she has and leaves it all on the court. Tessa (Bradley) also had a great game and finished with 15 assists and 7 digs, and Ella (Miles) has been a great addition to the varsity team and is performing well in games.” Horsley added
The Teays Valley volleyball team will be back in action for another OCC Buckeye division game on Thursday at Reynoldsburg Summit Campus on August 29 for a 7 o’clock first serve.

Up and Down with TVHS Boys Golf
(TVHS Golf)
On Saturday, the Teays Valley boys golf team was on the links when they traveled to Chapel Hill and finished 18th in the DeSales Invitational. Out of the total of 22 teams, Teays Valley shot 336 and was led by Caden Sherman, who shot 81. Vance Hanger and Noah Hilgenberg had 82, Carter Hutchinson had 91, and Trent Hicks got 98 on the scorecard. “I thought we had another good week last week. Our guys continue to get better around the greens. We need to do a better job off the tee in order to put us in a position to hit more greens in regulation. I thought we did a good job of that on Saturday at Chapel Hill.” TV coach Brian Barnett said.
On Wednesday, the golf team hit the fairways at Eaglesticks for the OCC shootout. Teays Valley shot 339 as a team and finished 15th. Noah Hilgenberg shot an 82; Vance Hager shot an 83; and Caden Sherman shot an 86. Carter Hutchinson shot an 88, and Branson Crabtree shot a 92. The Vikings next play on Wednesday at Darby Creek in the third OCC Tournament of the season. ”Going into OCC #3, our focus needs to be from 100 yards and in. If we can put ourselves in a position to get the ball in the hole in 3 shots or less from 100 yards, we will have a chance to win. We also can not make a big number. Making a lot of pars and bogeys will allow us to put up a solid number.” Barnett added

TVHS Volleyball @ Circleville 08/22
Circleville-The Teays Valley Viking volleyball team was in action on Thursday, August 22 against former MSL rival the Circleville Tigers and would drop three close competitive sets (26-24, 25-23, and 25-23). Circleville and Teays Valley went back and forth in every match. Ellie Tatman had 27 digs, going 22/22 serve receptions with three assists; Ella Miles had 10 digs with 13/14 serve receptions; Tessa Bradley had 10 digs and 12 assists; she also added 2 aces. Emma Minton 4 digs, 19 assists, 1 ace Ella McGee: 10 kills, 2 blocks Jenna Pence: 8 kills, 3 blocks Brianna Helser: 7 kills, 1 block Allie Carte: 6 kills Noa Craft: 4 kills, 1 block Brenna Carothers: 1 kill, 3 aces, 3 digs, 12 serve receptions Zoie Hall and Aubrey Helser had one kill each.
The Blue and Gold would come back from a 24-17 deficit in the 1st set to take it to a win-by-two situation, but Circleville made an adjustment against the Teays middle hitter, Ellie Tatman, who was avoided. “She was playing perfect defense last night, but we allowed their outsides to hit the line too many times, and they also beat us with several tips and shots to the deep,’ TV coach Amy Horsley said. Teays Valley finished the night with 38 errors compared to Circleville's 32, and that was the difference as the Vikings lost each set by two sets and had 11 hitting errors in the final set. Circleville finished the evening with higher serve, receive, and hit percentages, but Teays was able to finish with 1 more ace, 8 more digs, and 3 more blocks than the Tigers. "We had a strong start to each set to gain an early lead but then couldn’t finish the set. Our hitting percentages are currently higher than they have been because we have been working so much on our fundamentals and decision-making, and our defense also continues to improve, says Horsley. “Circleville was very impressive, staying mentally strong throughout the game because they were down early in each set, but they stayed calm and composed to fight back and forth to win each set. They never looked like they were playing chaotically or out of control, so we will continue to work on our fundamentals, especially with hitting and our chemistry, by having girls work most in the lineups that they will be in for games. Another focus that we will continue to emphasize is our mental game and how to respond and bounce back from adversity during a match. The girls are going to analyze a film from the game, and then we are going to meet on Monday after practice to discuss their analyses and watch some of the film together. I have given them a sheet of things that each position has to look for and state as they are watching. the film. I hope that this “classroom work” pays off and helps to build their IQ and knowledge.” Horsley added.
The Teays Valley volleyball team will be back in action on Tuesday, August 27, when they open league play in the OCC Buckeye against the Lancaster Golden Gales.

TVHS Boys Soccer @ Franklin Heights 8/20
Teays Valley boys soccer took on Franklin Heights from Demorest Road in Columbus. And the Vikings would take down the Golden Falcons 11-2 in an offensive assault from the blue and gold. Teays Valley collected goals from Timo Pursiainen, who had three consecutive goals in the second half and six points on three shots. Landon Moore had one goal with two points on one shot. Gavin Waters had two shots and two goals with four points; Dominic Hopper had one shot with a goal and two points; and Maxwell Spencer led the way with four goals on four shots with eight points. “Really slow to start; we gave up a goal early due to a little miscommunication, but the boys battled back and really settled in and played the way that we are capable. Max Spencer had four, Timo had three, Gavin had two, and Dominic Hopper had a goal. Logan Moore had a goal, but the thing that I’m impressed with is the fact that we let pretty much our starters sit for the whole second half, and we really didn’t have a letdown out there in what we’re doing. It was good to see that they’re able to come out, step up, play together, play the system, and keep grinding,” TV Coach Shane Harber said.

We made some adjustments in the second and won, then stuck with what was working. I was proud of the girls tonight for their resilience and more consistent play. TVHS Girls Soccer vs. Central Crossing (8/19/2024)
The Teays Valley girls soccer team was in action on Monday as well; they took to the pitch to take on the Central Crossing Comets. The Vikings got started quickly when Brooklyn Herbert connected with a goal to take the lead early in the first half. Herbert would also score later in the half to collect both scores for the blue and gold and the first 40 minutes. Allie Rice began the scoring in the second half, and Ella Jacob also saw the back of the net and collected a goal in the final half. Teays benefitted from an own goal late in the game to take a 5-0 win. “I thought our effort was good. We were fortunate to score early on and want to make sure that we kept on playing because we always talk about whether it’s mistakes or something good at the beginning of the game. There’s always a long way to go in soccer, so we are proud that we kept our effort going, and after that, we kept playing hard. Our effort was good all night, and in the second half, the same thing happened: we came out and played hard right from the start, and that’s always good, and we just have to keep working hard every day, and we had some of our younger guys come in and play some important minutes for us, and that’s going to be very crucial for us going forward this season.” Says TV coach Jason Herbert.

TVHS Athletic Round-up
TVHS Girls Tennis vs. Washington Courthouse
The very first Monday TVHS roundup will feature the TVHS girl's tennis team that took on Washington Courthouse. The Vikings won 7-0 over the Washington Lions. Presley Hamilton, Abby Baker, and Zoe Proctor all won in straight sets. In doubles, Julia Kramer, Gracie Murlin, Shelby Spires, and Lexie Young also won in straight sets. TVHS Volleyball vs. Gahanna Lincoln
TVHS volleyball team for their first game of the 2024 campaign. The Vikings took on the Gahanna Lions and dropped 25-23, 25-27, and 25-15. In the first set, Teays Valley was up 14-8 before Gahanna came back to take the first set. The Vikings had an 11-6 lead in the second set, and Deanna closed the set on a 19-7 run to take the second. In the third set, Teays came within two points at 7-5 in the early stages, but the Lions took control and took the match 25-15 to defeat the Vikings in straight sets. “I attribute our loss to too many errors because volleyball is a game of errors, and we made too many. We need to work on our passing because, against Gahanna, it was inconsistent, we had several hitters with low numbers for our hitting percentages, and we couldn’t put the ball away. One concern I had was that we continued to make the same errors, so we need to practice moving on to adjusting and fixing them, but I honestly feel like it was a little bit of first-game jitters that played a part. It was disappointing because we made more mistakes each set and lost by more points. I want us to compete and improve with each set, and we didn’t do that,” TV Coach Amy Horsley said. The Teays Valley volleyball team will be back in action today, August 20 against the Westerville North Warriors. This will be at Westerville North High School, slated for a 7 o’clock start time.
