Teays Valley vs Dublin Scioto- Baseball District Championship

"Vikings Claim District Glory"

The Teays Valley Vikings made history on Wednesday, capturing the Central District 5 championship title with a thrilling 5-4 walk-off victory over the Dublin Scioto Irish. This marks the program’s first district title since 1985.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with the Vikings taking an early lead in the first inning thanks to Luke Smith's single. Smith's single in the third inning extended the Vikings' lead to 3-0. However, the Irish fought back, scoring four runs in the fourth and seventh innings to tie the game. The Irish's scoring was fueled by errors, walks, and a fielder's choice.

The game remained tied at 4-4 until the bottom of the 12th inning, when Luke Smith scored the winning run on a walk-off single, securing the Vikings' championship title. Smith was the game star, going 3-for-6 with three runs batted in and the game-winning hit. Trevor Hamilton and Westin Woodrum each collected multiple hits for the Vikings.

A Pitching Duel

The game featured a pitching duel between Brody Mann for the Vikings and Michael Wangler for the Irish. Mann pitched six quality innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out five and walking one. Wangler, on the other hand, allowed seven hits and four runs over five innings, striking out one and walking one. Tanner Smith earned the win in relief, pitching one inning and allowing one hit while striking out one and walking one. Crosby Nosek took the loss for the Irish, allowing one run on two hits over two-thirds of an inning.

Viking Highlights

Luke Smith provided a pop in the middle of the lineup and led Teays Valley with three runs batted in and the walk-off single. The cleanup hitter went 3-for-6 on the day. Trevor Hamilton and Westin Woodrum each collected multiple hits for the Vikings.

Irish’s end

For the Irish, Andrew Polchow led the team with two hits in four at-bats. Max Kauffman, Gavin Kissell, and Polchow each drove in one run for Dublin Scioto.

A Special Group

Vikings' coach Mark Colburn praised his team's determination and fight, saying, "I think it really comes down to our guys now and their fight and determination to play this game for each other. It is a special group of guys. I'm proud of them." Coach Colburn also praised Brody Mann's performance, saying, ‘Brody Mann was who he has always been this year. He was electric."

Colburn also reflected on the team's history, saying, "We've had a lot of great players and teams come through here and have come up short. I might have been 6 weeks old, so it's crazy to think about the last time Teays Valley won a district championship in 1985." Colburn also mentioned the team's seniors, saying, "We have 3 seniors that were a part of the 2023 team that took 2 days to beat Lancaster in a Sectional Final. We played a 9-inning game against Pick Central earlier in the year as well. Our guys were positive in the dugout, supporting each other."

What's Next

The Vikings will move on to face the winner of the Northmont and Loveland game in the regional semifinal on June 3rd in Xenia.

Teays Valley vs Lancaster

Teays Valley Vikings Silence the Golden Gales, Shutout Lancaster 3-0

The Teays Valley Vikings softball team used a dominant performance in the circle by Alyvia Lawrentz to defeat the Lancaster Lady Gales 3-0 on Wednesday.

Lawrentz started the game for the Vikings and recorded 21 outs, surrendering just two hits and zero runs over seven innings while striking out seven and walking one.

The Vikings were the first to get on the board in the second inning when Aimee DeWeese hit into a double play, but one run scored.

Lawrentz earned the win for the Vikings, thanks in large part to her ability to keep the Lady Gales' high-powered offense at bay.

Lancaster senior pitcher Ashlin Mowery took the loss, despite a strong performance in which she gave up just two hits and struck out nine. The three runs she gave up were all unearned.

The Vikings added two more runs in the fourth inning on two throwing errors by the Lady Gales and a single dropped into right field.

Makayla Jones went 1-for-2 at the plate and led the team with one RBI. Micah Mann also collected a hit for the Vikings.

Haley Kings and Kendall Brown each collected one hit for Lancaster.

The Lady Gales never threatened to score, going down in order in the third, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.

With the win, Teays Valley handed Lancaster its first league loss in 30 games, ending the Lady Gales' 30-game league winning streak.

The victory was especially sweet for the Vikings, who fell to Lancaster in last year's regional semifinals, suffering a tough 10-0 defeat.

"We knew Lancaster was a great team with great hitting and pitching," Lawrentz said. "My team and I knew that it would be a tough game, making sure we had very little mistakes. Before the game even started, we knew that we would have to pick each other up and that there was going to be failure. We just had to stay calm, relax, and work one pitch at a time."

Lawrentz also credited her teammates with helping her stay focused on the mound. "My teammates helped me stay calm on the mound throughout the game. Also, Mak (Jones) and I work extremely well together behind the plate."

Teays Valley Coach Derrick Hastler praised his team's performance, saying, "The girls really worked hard to prepare and it paid off; they stayed simple at the plate and kept their heads up through a tough night at the plate. We came in with the mindset of being disciplined with our eyes and just trying to get the ball in play, and they did a good job of that. Overall, we played really well defensively. We had two mistakes on one play, but kept our composure and overcame those."

Hastler also lauded Lawrentz's effort in the circle. "We can't be more complimentary of Liv's effort in the circle, but the way the girls played in support was tremendous. Liv did a great job of missing barrels and sometimes that means there are tough plays to make, our girls stepped up made a lot of great plays."

The Vikings will travel to Reynoldsburg tomorrow for another OCC-Buckeye game.

Teays Valley Softball Team Faces Challenging 2025 Schedule

As the Teays Valley softball team prepares to take the field, they're faced with a daunting schedule that pits them against some of the state's premier programs, including multiple teams ranked among the Columbus Dispatch's Top 25.

First up, the Vikings are heading to Cincinnati for a series of games, including matchups against Centerville (No. 17 Dispatch Top 25), Mason (No. 21 Dispatch Top 25), and Anthony Wayne (No. 6 Dispatch Top 25). Centerville returns five players who earned all-conference recognition, while Mason returns several top players, including Marist commit Annabelle Geiser, who hit .620 and stole 29 bases. Anthony Wayne, meanwhile, finished 30-2 last season and returns pitcher Molly Conner, a first-team all-state honoree who is committed to Notre Dame. The Vikings will face off against Anthony Wayne on March 29th at William Mason High School.

In April, the Vikings will face off against Marysville on April 4th at Marysville. This matchup is a rematch of last year's district championship game, which the Vikings won 8-7 in extra innings, thanks in part to a solo homer by Avery Stratton in the eighth inning.

The Vikings will also face off against Lebanon (No. 25 Dispatch Top 25) on March 5th at the Cruiser Classic. The Warriors return their entire pitching staff from last season, which allowed just 2.1 runs per game. They also return star catcher Ella Teubner, an Iowa commit who hit .532 with nine home runs, 12 doubles, three triples, and 49 RBIs.

Other notable matchups on the Vikings' schedule include games against Lancaster (No. 5 Dispatch Top 25) on April 2nd and April 17th, Hilliard Bradley (No. 11 Dispatch Top 25) on May 8th, and Olentangy Liberty on April 29th. Lancaster fell to Watkins Memorial in the regional final last season, but returns seven starters, including pitcher/first baseman Ashlin Mowery, who is committed to Louisiana State, and first-team all-state catcher Kendall Brown, who hit .549. Hilliard Bradley, meanwhile, returns star pitcher and hitter Michaela Moody, who went 10-1 with two saves last season. Olentangy Liberty fell to Lancaster in the district championship game last season but will be looking to bounce back this year.

The Vikings' first test comes against the Elks of Centerville, with a 12:00 pm first pitch on 3/26.

Teays Valley Baseball Team Ready to Take on New Challenges in OCC

As the 2025 season approaches, the Teays Valley baseball team is primed for a breakout year under the guidance of Coach Mark Colburn. With a solid foundation of returning players and a demanding schedule that will test their mettle, the Vikings are ready to make a lasting impression in their inaugural season in the highly competitive Ohio Capital Conference (OCC).

Returning Players and Strengths

The team returns several key players from last year's squad, including Brody Mann, Tyler Mathews, Trevor Hamilton, Tyler Blankenship, Luke Reese, Luke Smith, Gavin Gilpen, Peyton McElfresh, Brody Weiler, and Westin Woodrum. These players bring a wealth of experience and talent to the table and will be counted on to lead the team this season.

New Challenges in the OCC

The Vikings' entrance into the OCC Buckeye Division presents a new challenge for the team. Coach Colburn is excited about the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the state and believes that the team's schedule has prepared them well for the transition.

Goals and Expectations

The team's goals for the season are to compete in the OCC and to contend for a District Title. With a strong returning core and several new players who could make an impact, Coach Colburn is optimistic about the team's chances.

Familiar Faces, New Roles

As the Teays Valley Vikings baseball team steps up to the plate for the new season, several players are poised to take on bigger roles. Brady Farmer, Jayden Morrison, and Tanner Kelley will look to build on their experience from last year, while newcomers Knupp, Smith, Young, Kisner, and Dains will bring fresh talent to the varsity team.

Team Style and Mindset

The Vikings' style of play is characterized by good pitching, clean defense, and timely hitting. Coach Colburn emphasizes the importance of energy and hustle and expects the team to play with a fast-paced and aggressive mindset.

Message to Fans and Supporters

Coach Colburn's message to Teays Valley fans and supporters is one of excitement and optimism. "We're looking forward to a great season," he said. "We've got a talented team and a challenging schedule, and we're excited to see how it all plays out."

The Ship Leaves Port:

The Vikings' season gets underway on March 28th during spring break in Tennessee with a game against Lane Tech from Chicago, IL. The team will face a challenging schedule, but Coach Colburn is confident that they have the talent and depth to compete with anyone.

Teays Valley Softball Looks to Make Impact in OCC-Buckeye Debut

The Teays Valley Vikings softball team is gearing up for the 2025 season, led by Coach Derrick Hastler. With a mix of seasoned veterans and talented newcomers, Hastler is optimistic about the team's potential for success and excited to see how they'll stack up against the best teams in the OCC-Buckeye division.

The Vikings return several key players, including seniors Alyvia Lawrentz and Micah Mann. Lawrentz, a pitcher, brings valuable experience to the circle, while Mann's versatility and leadership will be crucial in all facets of the game. Makayla Jones will anchor the team behind the plate.

While the Vikings have some talented returnees, they will need to rely on a number of young players to fill out the roster. Freshman Makayla Jones will take over behind the plate, while Micah Mann will move to shortstop. Junior Ava Ackerman and freshman Sophia Hastler will compete for the starting center field spot.

Despite the youth and inexperience of the team, Hastler is confident that the Vikings can compete in the OCC-Buckeye division. "We're excited to see how our young players will perform," he said.

The Vikings will need to work on replacing the production of last year's senior class, which won a lot of games over their four years. However, Hastler is optimistic about the team's potential and believes that they can overcome their youth and inexperience to have a successful season.

With a strong leadership core and some talented young players, the Teays Valley Vikings softball team is looking to make a statement in 2025.

Key Matchups to Watch:

Teays Valley vs. Lancaster: A matchup against one of the top teams in the OCC-Buckeye will provide a stiff test for the Vikings.

Players to Watch:

Alyvia Lawrentz: The team will rely on the senior pitcher to guide them in the circle. Micah Mann: The senior's versatility and leadership will be crucial in the team's success. Makayla Jones: The freshman catcher will be looked to provide a spark behind the plate. Ava Ackerman and Sophia Hastler: The junior and freshman, respectively, will be competing for the starting center field spot.

First Games on Tap for the Vikings:

The Teays Valley softball team is set to kick off their season with a busy stretch of games in the Cincinnati area. The Vikings will play three games in four days, starting with a matchup at Centerville on March 26. They'll follow that up with a game at Mount Notre Dame on March 27 and then head to Mason on March 29 for a doubleheader against Mason and Anthony Wayne.
