Teays Valley Girls Basketball: A Season of Growth and Development 2/27

The 2024-2025 Teays Valley Vikings girls' basketball team faced a challenging season in the competitive OCC-Buckeye division. Despite being a youthful squad, the Vikings showed flashes of brilliance and growth throughout the year.

According to Coach Younkin, the team's biggest accomplishment was coming together to compete in a tough schedule and not letting it intimidate them. The Vikings played against several top-notch teams, including Minford, Bloom Carroll, Fairfield Union, Circleville, Grove City, and Logan, all of which are still competing in the state tournament or made deep runs in the postseason.

One of the team's biggest challenges was their age and inexperience. However, as the season progressed, the Vikings gained valuable experience and developed their skills. Coach Younkin noted that the team struggled against senior-led teams, but they competed hard and fought until the final buzzer.

Tessa Horsley and Cami Robins emerged as leaders on the court, with Horsley leading the team in scoring and rebounding most nights. Robins, meanwhile, kept the offense running smoothly against tough opponents. The Vikings' strengths included their speed, talent, and effort, but they struggled with mental toughness, consistency, and developing their basketball IQ.

To address these weaknesses, Coach Younkin emphasized the importance of determined scoring, aggressive helpside defense, and developing the team's understanding of different defenses and offenses. One of the most memorable games of the season was against Minford, an all-senior team. The Vikings had a chance to win deep into the second half, and Coach Younkin was proud of the team's performance.

Another highlight was beating Canal Winchester and securing Coach Younkin's 100th career varsity win. The team's chemistry and camaraderie developed significantly over the course of the season, thanks to the players' coachability and hard work in practice.

Senior captain Kylie Burgett provided outstanding leadership and will be missed next season. However, Coach Younkin is confident that three junior players observed Burgett's leadership and will step up to fill the void.

Coach Younkin expected the Vikings to finish mid-pack in conference play. Despite some tough losses, the team competed hard every night and gained valuable experience. The entire team showed significant growth and improvement over the course of the season, with players like Avery Mann, Kenzington Younkin, Allie Rice, Cooper McManaway,  Areyana Karshner, Amelia Brumfield, and Addie Keplar making major strides.

The Vikings secured several notable wins throughout the season, including a 46-39 win over Logan on December 3, a 57-23 rout of Groveport on December 17, and a 43-40 win over Canal Winchester on February 4.

Looking ahead to next season, Coach Younkin's goals include developing a more determined scoring mentality, improving the team's helpside defense, and increasing their basketball IQ. With a strong summer of training and a focus on building on this year's experiences, the Vikings are poised for a successful 2025-2026 season.

As I reflect on the 2024-2025 season, one thing is clear: the Lady Vikings are a tough and resilient team. I had the privilege of covering 21 of their games, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have connected with the team and coaches. I'm already looking forward to the 2025-2026 season!

TVHS Girls Basketball at Worthington Kilbourne 2/17

The Wolves claw their way to a 43-29 win over the Vikings in the district semi-finals from Worthington.

The Vikings got off to a strong start, outscoring the Wolves 9-4 in the first quarter. Cami Robins scored the first point of the night with a free throw, and Oliviah Wilkerson matched it with a bucket to take a 2-1 lead. Teays Valley's Tessa Horsley then hit a three-pointer, followed by a Cooper McManaway three to take a 7-3 lead. Wilkerson split a pair of free throws to make it 7-4, and McManaway's fast-break bucket made it 9-4 to end the first quarter.

However, Worthington Kilbourne responded with a 14-point run in the second quarter to take the lead. The Wolves' Mia Williams hit two three-pointers, and Oliviah Wilkerson added five points, including a layup before the buzzer sounded, to take a 16-11 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Audrey Bennett hit a jumper to open the half, and Williams split a pair of free throws to make it 19-15. Williams hit a three, then Wilkerson got fouled and converted both free throws to make it 24-15. Avery Mann connected on a bucket to make it 24-17, but back-to-back Wilkerson buckets made it 28-17. Robins drew some contact and went perfect from the line to make it 29-19 going into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, an intentional foul was called on the Vikings. Kilbourne went one of two from the line to lead 32-19, but Horsley went the full length of the court to make it an 11-point deficit at 32-21. Horsley found a streaking McManaway for three to trail by 10. Audrey Bennett hit a free throw to make it 37-26, but McManaway hit a three to make it 39-29. A Mia Williams three made it 41-29, and the Wolves split a pair of free throws to make it 43-29, ending the Vikings' season.

The foul situation was a significant factor in the game, with the Vikings attempting only four free throws and making three, while the Wolves were awarded 28 free throws and converted 14.

The Vikings shot well from distance, going 4-8 from three. McManaway hit three threes for Teays Valley. Horsley pounded the glass, collecting five rebounds to lead Teays Valley. Avery Mann added four points, while Cami Robins chipped in with three points.

Oliviah Wilkerson led Worthington Kilbourne in scoring with 16 points. Audrey Bennett made four of 10 free throws, and Worthington Kilbourne attempted 28 Mia Williams was a threat from beyond the arc, knocking down four three-pointers. Williams scored 12 points, while Bennett added 11 points. Bella White contributed two points, and Dillion Walker and Riley Wilkinson each added one point to help Worthington Kilbourne.

"We've talked about being aggressive all season and taking care of the ball," said TV coach Trevor Younkin. "When you're playing a team like Worthington Kilbourne, who's 17-5, we knew we had the capability to handle them. We showed that in the first quarter. It seemed like they weren't used to tournament play, having not won a tournament game in three years. We, on the other hand, have been here before. Yes, we're young, and yes, we're somewhat experienced. But they fought through it, causing us frustration and turnovers. There are many factors that contributed to this loss, and it ultimately comes down to our youth. We'll use this as a learning experience, grow over the summer, and come back stronger next season. We'll return almost our entire team, except for Kylie Burgett. As I told the team in the locker room, we need to take what we've learned this year, apply it over the summer, and carry it into next season."

The loss brings the Lady Vikings' season to a close with an 8-16 overall record.

Tournament Preview: Lady Vikings vs Falcons 2/12

The Teays Valley Lady Vikings (7-15) are gearing up to face off against the Franklin Heights Falcons (5-16) in their first OHSAA Tournament game. Both teams have struggled to find consistency this season, but Teays Valley will be looking to bounce back from their recent 60-30 loss to Pickerington Central.

Lady Vikings Look to Regroup

Teays Valley's previous game saw Cooper McManaway lead the team in scoring with eight points, including two three-pointers. However, the Lady Vikings were unable to contain Pickerington Central's offense, ultimately falling short. Against Franklin Heights, Teays Valley will need to tighten up their defense and find ways to score consistently.

Falcons Seek to End Skid

Franklin Heights, on the other hand, has lost 15 of their last 16 games, including a 57-20 drubbing at the hands of Whitehall-Yearling. The Falcons have struggled to find offense, averaging just 36.0 points per game. Riley Hambel has been a bright spot for Franklin Heights, leading the team with 13.4 points per game.

Key Matchups

Teays Valley's defense will face a significant challenge in containing Franklin Heights' star player, Riley Hambel. As the Falcons' primary scoring threat, Hambel's performance will be crucial in determining the outcome of the game. Additionally, the Falcons' offense will need to find ways to score against a Teays Valley defense that has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season.

Game Details

The Lady Vikings will host the Falcons on February 12th at 7:00 pm at Ashville's Teays Valley High School. I'll be at TVHS, ready to catch all the action as the Lady Vikings take on the Falcons!

Coach's Corner

"You can never overlook a team, no matter what their record is, because if you overlook us and our record, bad things could happen to you," said Teays Valley coach Trevor Younkin. "It's tournament time; our record is 0-0 and the 7-15 doesn't matter. It's a whole new season, and because we're young, we will return 90% of our team, so we're going to use this as experience." Said TV coach Trevor Younkin

TVHS Girls Basketball vs Pickerington Central 2/10

"Vikings Can't Keep Up with Unbeaten Tigers"

Leading 11-9, Pickerington Central went on a 17-2 run to pull further away. The Tigers then extended their lead with a 15-point run, making it difficult for Teays Valley to catch up.

The game began with Pickerington Central taking an early 6-0 lead, prompting the Vikings to call a timeout. Teays Valley responded with their first basket, courtesy of Tessa Horsley, followed by a three-pointer from Cami Robins in the first quarter. Horsley added a free throw to narrow the gap to 7-9.

However, Pickerington Central quickly regained momentum as Gabby Plair sank back-to-back three-pointers, and London Johnson added another to make it 9-17. Just before the first period expired, Zoe Coleman scored a jumper to extend the Pickerington Central lead to 9-19.

In the second quarter, Avery Mann hit the first basket for the Vikings at 5:20. Mikaila Assmoah and Blossom Wallace then scored for the Tigers, and Pickerington Central went on a 24-8 run to take a 43-17 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Areyana Karshner got the Vikings on the board first, making it 19-49. However, Pickerington Central quickly regained control, with Blossom Wallace and Deyon Smith scoring baskets to ignite a scoring surge. The Tigers' defense then clamped down, holding Teays Valley to just 13 points in the second half, as they cruised to a 60-30 victory.

Cooper McManaway led Teays Valley in scoring with eight points, including two three-pointers. Tessa Horsley collected seven rebounds to lead the Vikings on the glass.

Other key contributors for Teays Valley included Amelia Brumfield with 7 points, Tessa Horsley with 6 points, Cami Robins with 5 points, Avery Mann with 2 points, and Areyana Karshner with 2 points.

London Johnson led Pickerington Central in scoring with 12 points. Kennady Gordon and Gabby Plair each hit multiple three-pointers for the Tigers.

Other key contributors for Pickerington Central included Zoe Coleman with 11 points, Blossom Wallace with 9 points, Kennady Gordon with 10 points, Gabby Plair with 8 points, Deyon Smith with 4 points, Mikaila Assmoah with 4 points, and Ameera Jenkins with 2 points.

"Obviously, when you're going against the fifth-ranked team in the central district and in division one, and who are undefeated in conference play, you have to bring your best," said TV coach Trevor Younkin. "Our girls battled and brought a lot to the table, but we just didn't hit some shots and took care of the ball at times. They capitalized on our mistakes with easy transition layups. Despite the loss, I'm thrilled with the girls' attitude and fight. They didn't give up, and it would have been easy to throw in the towel. I'm very proud of that and I told them in the locker room after the game, our record doesn't matter—whether it's 7-15 or whatever. Everyone is 0-0 going into the tournament, and we're going to use this experience to fuel us moving forward."

Next up for the Vikings will be their opening OHSAA tournament game against Franklin Heights on Wednesday for a 7:00 pm tip.

Teays Valley girls basketball at Newark 2/7

"Teays Valley Shows Heart, Can't Overcome Newark's Strong Offense"

Newark-The Lady Vikings struggled to keep up with the visiting Newark Wildcats, ultimately falling 63-32 on Friday. Despite the loss, Tessa Horsley had a solid game with 11 points and seven rebounds to lead Teays Valley.

The game began with Emma Quakenbush opening the scoring for Newark, followed by a Calli Geller basket. The Vikings took a timeout with 5:54 remaining in the first, trailing by six. After the timeout, Avery Mann scored the Vikings' first basket, making it 6-2. Tessa Horsley then added a basket, followed by Mann's free throw. Sam Hull of Newark made two free throws, and Horsley drew a foul, making one of two free throws to make it 9-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Cooper McManaway was fouled shooting a three and converted one of three free throws. Quakenbush then hit back-to-back threes, making it 15-8. Leah Eckenrode matched with a three-pointer, making it 17-8. The Vikings took another timeout and responded with an Amelia Brumfield two-pointer, assisted by Areyanna Karshner. Brumfield then drew a foul and made two free throws. Karshner pivoted around the Newark defense to make it 17-14, and Brumfield's basket put the Vikings down by one, making it 17-16. Eckenrode's two-pointer made it 19-16, and Quakenbush's buzzer-beating three-pointer made it 24-16 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Avery Mann took a pass from Areyanna Karshner to make it 24-18. Hull made it 27-18 with a three-pointer, and Horsley busted through traffic to make it 27-20. Quakenbush hit another three-pointer, making it 30-20. Horsley then knocked down a straight-away three, but the Wildcats responded with three baskets in a row, making it 39-23. The Vikings responded with Avery Mann scoring off an Addie Keplar steal, and Horsley got fouled, making one of two free throws to make it 39-28. Eckenrode hit another two-pointer before the buzzer, making it 41-28. In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats went on a 22-4 run to close out the game, securing a 63-32 OCC Buckeye win.

Coach's thought:

"I thought our first half was very, very good. I don't even know when we were down... They had a three right before halftime. I was very impressed with how they played. They came out punched in the face. We called a timeout and we reacted. I think we were down one or tied with the lead. I thought we had a really good first half, but in the second half, I feel like they were the more intense, more physical, and more aggressive team than we were, and that comes with growing pains. There's no reason why they're just the second-ranked team in our conference. and all we needed to show up was to be physical and we didn't match that in the second half," said coach Trevor Younkin.

The Vikings (7-14, 6-7)  will take the weekend off to host OCC-Buckeye division-winning Pickerington Central (17-3, 11-0) on Monday.

In the final quarter, McManaway hit a three-pointer to extend the Vikings' lead to 37-30. Canal Winchester refused to give up, with Pierce Cephas scoring a basket and missing a foul shot to make it 37-32. Cephas added another bucket to make it 37-34, but Horsley's driving bucket extended the Vikings' lead to 39-34. Ashley Cicora's put-back made it 39-36, and Cephas tied the game at 39-39.

However, Areyanna Karnsher's rebound and layup gave the Vikings a 41-39 lead. Cooper McManaway and Cami Robbins sealed the win with a pair of free throws, securing a hard-fought 43-40 victory over Canal Winchester.

Teays Valley head coach Trevor Younkin praised his team's effort, saying, "It's one of those games where we're battling for the middle of the OCC, and Canal is a talented team. They have good leadership and good seniors, and we knew we had to play well for four quarters. Unfortunately, the second quarter was bad for us, 15 to 4. Let them take the lead on us in the second half again; we are still trying to battle through some of the ups and downs of one quarter here, one quarter there. I just look at it and say, 'Hey, we have a letdown, but we have to learn from it.' But here's the thing: we had a letdown, but we fought and got a victory, so there was a lot of growth tonight, and I was proud of it."

The Vikings' win was also a milestone for their head coach, who secured his 100th career victory. "Nine years of varsity coaching at Westfall and at Teays Valley as a head coach, you have some great years and then you have some years where you’re building. We went 17 wins the last three years consecutively and this year is a year where we know we were young; we knew we weren’t going to get as many wins but to get the hundredth victory means we have been around the game a lot. I played here at Teays Valley and in college, and I've been around some great coaches and some great mentors to help push me and guide me. It's been a lot and Josh (Kellough) is my right-hand man. I don’t coach unless Josh is with me. Josh is one of those guys that keeps me on my toes. He sees things I don’t and he understands what I’m passionate about and he rolls with it. Josh has been active in the community. I have been active in the community. What’s best for the girls is what’s our focus. It's just nice to do it on senior night For Kylie. I’m glad we got a win for her and it’s a special day for someone that has devoted their days for four years. It’s a special night for her. I don’t want to take the attention away from her, but it’s nice that two things were accomplished tonight."

Teays Valley (7-13, 6-6) will travel to Newark (14-4, 9-3) for their next game on Friday. I will be making the trip out east to cover both Vikings' boys' and girls' basketball teams!

Vikings Cruise Past Groveport, 58-28

"Robins Leads the Charge as the Vikings Outrun the Cruisers"

Cami Robins led the team with 12 points, contributing 2 assists and 1 rebound. Cooper McManaway added 11 points, 2 assists, and 1 rebound. Amelia Brumfield and Avery Mann each scored 10 points, with Brumfield also recording 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block, and Mann grabbing 5 rebounds and 1 steal.

Kylie Burgett chipped in 5 points, shooting 2/3 from the field and 1/2 from three-point range. Tessa Horsley dominated the boards with 10 rebounds, while also scoring 5 points, dishing out 4 assists, and making 2 steals. Areyana Karshner contributed 4 points and 3 rebounds, and Kenzington Younkin added 1 point, 2 rebounds, and 1 block.

Teays Valley Girls took control early, going on a 13-point run to take the lead. They extended their advantage to 31-16 by halftime, thanks to a 16-6 second-quarter performance. The Vikings continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring Groveport 27-12.

Auzure Hampton led Groveport-Madison with 10 points and 4 rebounds. Aubriona Benjamin added 6 points and 3 rebounds, while Tatyana Bailey chipped in 4 points and 5 rebounds. Angelica Brock contributed 3 points and 3 rebounds, and Skyiah Johnson also scored 3 points. Rounding out the scoring was Aurri Benjamin with 2 points and 2 rebounds.

Coach Trevor Younkin praised his team's effort, saying, "I thought as a team, we played very well together and we were there for each other. We made the extra pass. We made the right extra pass. We took care of the ball better than we have. We gave ourselves some cushion and allowed that cushion to grow into taking control of the game. There have been times when we’ve had opportunities to get some cushion, but we really got it tonight. Overall excellent team performance. I was proud of the effort of the entire team."

Younkin also commended senior Kylie Burgett, who scored five points, including a crucial three-pointer. "Kylie is our lone senior. She is a phenomenal teammate; Kylie brings energy every day to practice. She doesn’t complain. She doesn’t show bad body language. She’s very coachable. She leads a team vocally and I couldn’t ask for a better senior. She knows her role. She steps up every day, no matter if it's good, bad, or ugly, and gives everything she can to the team for her to hit a three and hit a mid-range jumper. It was electrifying, and the whole team was just ecstatic. She gives her heart every day and sees them support her. I couldn’t ask for a better team and it means a lot to me and I’m proud of her and I’m proud of what we’re doing."

Younkin also praised Cami Robins, saying, "We have a lot of girls that can bring something to the table but to be able to play point guard and get opportunities to shoot like she does and to capitalize like she did tonight is phenomenal. she’s one of the top girls in the OCC Buckeye division. You know she’s a competitor; she doesn’t let her emotions bother her. She fights through it. She’s ready to go any day, any night, with the potential with Cami; it is just unbelievable, in my opinion, to be a sophomore and do what she’s doing now. I can’t wait to see what she does next year."

The Vikings (6-12, 5-6) return home to face Canal Winchester (6-11, 4-6) on Tuesday. The Indians fell to Newark, 60-37, on Friday.

Gameday Preview: Teays Valley vs Groveport 1/31

"The Lady Vikings Look to Bounce Back Against Groveport"

The Teays Valley Vikings (5-13, 4-7) will host the Groveport-Madison Cruisers (2-12, 1-8) at 6:30 pm from Teays Valley High School, looking to bounce back from a tough 49-42 loss to Lancaster on Thursday.

Groveport may have a struggling record, but Coach Trevor Younkin knows they are a good team that can't be underestimated. "Their record may not be what they are, teams are saying about us. Yeah, we're battling for the bottom half of OCC, but it'll be a good game. They'll come here ready to play; they are athletic."

In their previous matchup on December 17th, Teays Valley dominated Groveport 57-23. The Vikings will look to contain Groveport's top scorers. The top Cruisers scorers are led by Aubriona Benjamin and Demiyah Johnson, who each contributed seven points in their previous matchup.

Coach Younkin emphasized the importance of his team being prepared. "We have to go home and get rest and get ready to go to school tomorrow and be ready to play a very athletic team. We have to do things right and take care of the ball and do things right."

The game tips off at 7:30 pm from Teays Valley High School. Stay tuned for live updates and a recap of the game.

Ashville-"Vikings' Comeback Bid Falls Short in 49-42 Loss to Lancaster"

Tessa Horsley's 16-point effort wasn't enough to lift Teays Valley to victory on Thursday, as Lancaster took the win, 49-42. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with multiple lead changes that kept the intensity high throughout.

Lancaster's 11-point run, sparked by trailing 17-12, proved to be a crucial moment in the game. However, Teays Valley Girls refused to back down, outscoring Lancaster 15-11 in the third quarter. The Vikings shot an impressive 6-8 in the quarter to stay competitive in the game.

The tone for the game was set in the first quarter, with Avery Mann scoring the first point of the night for Teays Valley with a jumper at 5:10. Lancaster's Harper Allen quickly tied it up at 2-2, and Molly Stedman took the lead with a three-pointer as the quarter expired to make it 12-11 after one quarter.

Despite their efforts, Teays Valley had a hard time within the arc, converting 14-28. Lancaster sealed the win with a 17-10 run in the fourth quarter, led by Molly Stedman's impressive 5-6 shooting from the free-throw line and a dagger three from Stoughton to take the 49-42 win.

The final statistics revealed a closely contested game. Lancaster finished 17-35 from the field, 7-17 from three-point range, and 8-14 from the free-throw line, with 16 rebounds and 7 turnovers. Teays Valley, meanwhile, shot 17-40 from the field, 3-12 from beyond the arc, and 5-6 from the free-throw line, pulling down 20 rebounds and committing 9 turnovers.

For Teays Valley, Cami Robins added two threes and scored 11 points, while Avery Mann pulled down seven rebounds and added 8 points. Cooper McManaway also chipped in 7 points for the Vikings. Lancaster, meanwhile, was led by Molly Stedman's 17 points, with both Stedman and Ky Pugh hitting multiple three-pointers. Pugh scored 13 points, Harper Allen added 10 points, and Lily Stoughton contributed 9 points to round out Lancaster's top performers.

Teays Valley coach Trevor Younkin reflected on the game, saying, "I see tonight's game as an echo of our past performances but with tiny steps forward. I don't view it as a step back, because despite the loss, there's still so much good to take away. I'm not dissatisfied with our effort. We battled from start to finish, coming back from a halftime deficit to tie the game in the third quarter. I couldn't be prouder of my girls for their resilience and determination."

Younkin emphasized the need for his team to find that extra gear to win close games. "We still need to find that extra momentum, grit, and drive that separates a good game from a winning one. We saw glimpses of it tonight, and we'll continue to work towards finding that edge to get the win."

Teays Valley (5-13, 4-6) will look to bounce back against Groveport (2-12, 1-8) on Friday in another OCC-Buckeye Division game. Stay tuned for a Gameday preview tomorrow on the Cruisers vs. the Vikings!

It should be a good battle at home, and hopefully, we can take what we learned the last couple of nights and go from there."

Grove City-The Vikings Can't Overcome the Greyhounds Offense

The Teays Valley Girls Basketball team put up a good fight but ultimately fell short, losing 54-33 to Grove City on Monday. Tessa Horsley scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome Grove City's potent offense.

Grove City took control early, leading 17-9 after the first quarter. The Lady Vikings struggled to contain Grove City's offense, allowing 54 points on 19 field goals, including three three-pointers. Mia Bumgarner led Grove City in scoring with 12 points.

Grove City controlled the game, shooting 19-37 from the field and 10-15 from the free throw line. In contrast, Teays Valley made it to the free throw line twice and went 1-2 from the line. Grove City also outrebounded Teays Valley 17-4.

Tessa Horsley led the Lady Vikings with 13 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Cooper McManaway added eight points and two rebounds, while the Lady Dawgs had a balanced attack led by Mia Bumgarner, who scored 12 points and grabbed two rebounds. Grove City's Olivia Reber scored nine points, and Ava Summers added eight points.

"We are always proud of our effort. The girls are never going to back down from a challenge," said TV coach Trevor Younkin. "This group had success when they were younger, but they're just running into experienced teams. Joel Taylor does a great job with this program, and they're due to have some success. We needed these good challenges as we were getting closer to the tournament time to see the strength and the speed and the size and the amount of girls he rotated through. It was good for us to see. Hopefully, we can use that to our advantage when we play in our postseason."

Teays Valley (5-12, 4-5) will be back on the court at home on Thursday for an OCC Buckeye tilt at 7:30 pm against Lancaster (8-8, 3-5).

Gameday Preview: Teays Valley vs. Grove City

The Teays Valley Vikings (5-11, 4-5) are gearing up to take on the Grove City Greyhounds (14-2, 6-0) on Monday at 7:30 pm at Grove City High School.

A Look at the Numbers

Grove City holds an impressive overall record, with a 14-2 mark. Breaking down their record, the Greyhounds have a perfect 6-0 record in OCC-Ohio divisional play, an 8-2 mark in non-league games, and a 6-0 record at home. They have also performed well on the road, with a 7-2 record. The Greyhounds, are currently ranked #28 in the state of Ohio according to MaxPreps.

Teays Valley, meanwhile, has a 5-11 overall record, with a 4-5 mark in league play. The Vikings have a 1-6 record in non-league games, a 1-4 record at home, and a 4-6 record on the road.

Common Opponents

Both teams have faced common opponents, including Dublin Coffman, Reynoldsburg, and Newark. While Grove City has emerged victorious against Dublin Coffman and Reynoldsburg, they fell short against Newark. Teays Valley, on the other hand, has struggled against these opponents, with losses to Reynoldsburg and Newark.

Coach's Perspective

According to TV Coach Trevor Younkin, the Vikings' next challenge will require strategic adjustments. "Our next challenge is on Monday against Grove City; they are 13-2, and they'll likely run a matchup 2-3 zone. We'll focus on learning how to effectively counter it in practice, and from there, we'll move forward."

Previous Performance

Tessa Horsley led the blue and gold in their previous league loss at Reynoldsburg, scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds. The Vikings will look to build on this performance as they face off against the formidable Greyhounds.

I'll be on hand at Grove City High School tonight with live updates from the Vikings' matchup against the Greyhounds.

TVHS Girls Basketball at Reynoldsburg 1/24

Teays Valley lost a nail-biting 46-39 contest to Reynoldsburg on Friday, despite a strong showing from Tessa Horsley. In a thrilling game marked by nine lead changes, the Lady Vikings ultimately fell short to the Raiders.

Tessa Horsley led the charge for the blue and gold, scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Avery Mann and Cami Robins each scored eight points for Teays Valley Girls. Cooper McManaway added five points, while Areyana Karshner and Amelia Brumfield contributed three and two points, respectively.

A crucial 8-point run by Reynoldsburg in the second quarter proved to be a turning point, as they pulled away from Teays Valley's 13-12 lead. The Vikings fought back, taking the lead in the third quarter with 3:30 remaining when Cami Robins found Tessa Horsley in the paint for a 28-27 advantage. Avery Mann then sank two clutch free throws, stretching the lead to 30-27. The Vikings maintained their edge, heading into the fourth quarter up 32-30.

Unfortunately, the Raiders staged a late comeback, fueled by Deyona Carter's left-wing jumper and Sa'Mahn Johnson's explosive 7 points in the fourth quarter, after being held to just two points in the third. The Raiders closed out the game on a 16-7 run, sealing the victory.

Reynoldsburg was led by Sa'mahn Johnson, who dropped an impressive 27 points in their 46-39 win. Johnson received support from her teammates, including Deyona Carter with 7 points, Malaya Collins with 5 points, Naomi Merriweather with 4 points, and Naliyah Knight with 3 points.

"At halftime, we emphasized the importance of relaxing and playing our game," said TV Coach Trevor Younkin. "We'd taken the lead a couple of times, but Reynoldsburg made a significant run in the second quarter to pull ahead. They also switched up their defense, and we needed to quickly adjust and recognize their strategy on the court. By halftime, we'd grasped their approach and managed to take the lead in the third quarter. I believe we were up 32-30 heading into the fourth. I'm pleased to see that, although we still experience lapses, they're fewer and farther between than in the past. Previously, an entire quarter would get away from us, but now it's just half a quarter or a portion of it. We're close, and we need to overcome those moments. This Reynoldsburg team demonstrated their strength by beating Newark by 20 points, and on any given night in the OCC, anyone can come out on top. We're right there, and it's crucial that we continue to believe in each other. That's the key. We must keep fighting."

The Vikings (5-11, 4-5) will travel to Grove City (13-2, 6-0) to take on the Greyhounds for a 7:30 pm tip from Grove City High School.

In a game featuring 13 lead changes, Teays Valley Girls fell short to Bloom Carroll, 46-44, on Thursday. The Vikings started strong, going on an 11-point run to take the lead after trailing 3-0. They outscored Bloom Carroll 15-12 in the first quarter, thanks to four assists.

Standout Performances

Tessa Horsley led Teays Valley Girls in scoring with 11 points, while Whitney Passen scored 14 points to lead Bloom Carroll. The Vikings dominated in the paint, going 12-22 on two-pointers. Cooper McManaway and Addie Keplar each hit multiple three-pointers for Teays Valley Girls, who shot 5-11 (45%) from beyond the arc.

Sharing the Wealth

Teays Valley Girls passed the ball well, with nine assists on 17 made baskets. Horsley collected seven boards to lead the Vikings on the glass.

Heart-Wrenching Finale

In a heart-wrenching finale, Areyanna Karshner hit a three-pointer with 18.4 seconds left to even the game at 44-44. However, Bloom Carroll's Emma Sorrell sealed the win with two clutch free throws after a foul call, icing the Vikings away and securing a 46-44 victory.

Coach Younkin Reflects on Tough Loss

"It's one of those things—if you have youth, I'm going to teach them right here from the beginning," said Teays Valley Coach Trevor Younkin. "This is building for next year and the year after. The sophomores and juniors, we've got to pressure the ball, and I don't want them to settle and not understand how important pressuring is.

"I want to give credit to Bloom Carroll—there were some unbelievable threes in the first half to stay in the game and take the lead at halftime. It was a good old-fashioned MSL battle out in the backwoods, a fun fight; unfortunately, we came up on the wrong end.

"It wasn't one play, but four or five opportunities we had earlier in the game that could've made it a totally different situation. We're proud of their effort, proud of their fight, and we're right there—just knocking on the door. Bloom Carroll had four seniors out there with leadership experience, and that's what prevailed them to get this one here tonight."

Looking Ahead

Younkin emphasized the importance of learning from this experience, especially with a tough matchup looming ahead. "Reynoldsburg is very athletic, very quick," he noted. "I think it will be a different story than last time. We tried something different defensively that didn't work in the first half against Reynoldsburg, so we're going to have a good game plan and be ready for a very athletic team that came off a big win against Newark a few weeks ago."

Teays Valley (5-10, 4-4) will return to OCC-Buckeye league play Friday as they travel to Reynoldsburg (7-8, 4-3) for a 7:30 pm tipoff.

Game Day Preview: Teays Valley girls basketball at Bloom-Carroll

By Jacob Merideth; TV Athletics Beat Writer

The Bloom-Carroll Bulldogs are set to host the Teays Valley Vikings in a non-league matchup on Thursday. This marks the first meeting between the two teams outside of the Mid-State League. Led by Coach A.J. Ireland, Bloom-Carroll enters the contest with a 5-8 overall record and a 2-6 mark in the Mid-State League-Buckeye Division.

After a strong 20-6 campaign last season, which saw them claim the Division II Central District championship, the Bulldogs are looking to bounce back. This season, they have secured five wins, starting with a 43-34 victory over Bexley on December 10. They followed this up with back-to-back league wins over Liberty Union and an overtime thriller against Logan Elm on December 17, winning 53-51. In the new year, they dominated Chillicothe 53-21 on January 4 and rounded out their wins with a 46-31 victory at Granville on January 17.

Bloom-Carroll will rely on the leadership of returning letter-winners Tessa Brooks, Emma Sorrell, Charlie Conrad, Adyson Luke, and Whitney Passen. The team has also added fresh talent, including sophomores Davynn Miller and Riley Westfall, as well as juniors Ashlyn Berta and Sylvia Haughn.

Teays Valley, meanwhile, comes into the matchup with a 5-9 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the OCC. The Vikings are looking to snap a three-game losing streak against former MSL teams, having fallen to Fairfield Union, Logan Elm, and Circleville earlier this season. They are coming off an OCC-Buckeye win over Logan last Friday, led by Tessa Horsley's 17-point performance.

According to Teays Valley Coach Trevor Younkin, Thursday's matchup promises to be an intense battle. "It's always a dogfight between A.J. and our team because we always have good teams and great battles," Younkin said. "I'm glad we still get the opportunity to play them."

The Bulldogs and Vikings are set to tip off at 7:00 pm from Carroll. This will be a makeup of a previously postponed game. I will be on hand to cover this matchup for Traffic Light Sports and TV Athletics.

Gameday Preview: Teays Valley girls basketball vs Logan

By Jacob Merideth; TV Athletics Beat Writer

The Logan Chieftains (3-9, 1-6 OCC Buckeye) will hit the road tonight, traveling to face the Teays Valley Vikings (4-9, 3-4) at 7:30 pm in an OCC Buckeye matchup. The Vikings, hosting on their home court, will aim to sweep the season series after securing a 46-39 win in the previous matchup.

A Chance for Revenge

The Chieftains are coming off a tough loss to Canal Winchester and will be looking to bounce back against the Vikings. Logan's Makenzie Daubenmire led the team with 13 points in the previous matchup, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Vikings' Cami Robbins, who scored 15 points.

Looking for number 4 and 5

Both teams are struggling to find consistency this season, and a win tonight would be a much-needed boost. The Vikings have lost four straight games and are looking for win number five, while the Chieftains are looking to snap a one-game losing streak after dropping to Canal on Wednesday. The Lady Chiefs are searching for win number four.

Record Against Division Opponents

The Logan Chieftains and Teays Valley Vikings have several common opponents within the OCC Buckeye conference. Both teams have struggled against Pickerington Central, with Logan losing 84-21 and Teays Valley falling 65-35. They've also both lost to Newark, with Logan dropping a 62-32 decision and Teays Valley losing 50-33. Additionally, both teams have lost to Reynoldsburg, Lancaster, and Fairfield Union but have earned wins against Groveport-Madison, with Logan winning 39-37 and Teays Valley prevailing 57-23. Canal Winchester has also been a common opponent, with Logan losing 34-26 and Teays Valley winning 44-31.

Key Matchups to Watch

- Logan's Makenzie Daubenmire vs. Teays Valley's Cami Robbins: The two players had big games in the previous matchup, and their showdown tonight could be a key factor in the outcome.

- Logan's defense vs. Teays Valley's offense: The Vikings have struggled to score consistently this season, but they found success against the Chieftains in the previous matchup. Logan's defense will need to be strong tonight to contain the Vikings' offense.

Tonight's matchup will tip off at 7:30 pm at Teays Valley High School. I will be on hand covering the game for Traffic Lights Sports, "The Clipper.".

Teays Valley Girls Show Grit in 67-35 Loss to Pickerington Central

"Learning Experience: Teays Valley Girls Battle Hard Against OCC Buckeye Division Leading Pickerington Central"

The Teays Valley Girls traveled to Pickerington Central High School on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, to face off against the top-ranked Tigers. Despite a gritty effort, the Vikings ultimately fell 67-35.

Avery Mann led the charge for Teays Valley, scoring 10 points and making herself available for open shots. "Avery's been staying after practice, shooting, and making herself available," said Teays Valley Coach Trevor Younkin. "She's kind of like the quiet storm—you're not going to hear her, even though we want her to speak some more. I just told her to make herself available so she can catch and shoot. She has a nice shot; she doesn’t get a lot of attempts, and tonight she had the opportunity to make herself available, and we found her, and she hit some nice buckets.

Cami Robins followed Mann's performance with 8 points and 1 rebound, while Areyanna Karshner and Tessa Horsley each contributed 6 points. Karshner also dished out 3 assists, and Horsley grabbed a team-high 5 rebounds. Cooper McManaway chipped in 3 points and 2 rebounds, and Amelia Brumfield added 2 points and 1 rebound. Callie Banks also brought down two late rebounds off the bench for the Vikings.

The Pickerington Central Tigers had a balanced attack, with multiple players contributing to their 67-35 victory. London Johnson led the way with 16 points and 3 rebounds, while Zoe Coleman added 14 points and 3 rebounds. Ameera Jenkins was perfect from beyond the arc, hitting all three of her three-point attempts to finish with 9 points. Gabby Plair and Blossom Wallace each chipped in 7 points, with Wallace also grabbing 4 rebounds. Mikailia Asamoah and Kennady Gordon added 6 points apiece, and Annabel Frimpong was perfect from the free-throw line, hitting both of her attempts.

Despite the loss, Coach Younkin was proud of his team's effort and grit. "When you're playing the best team in the conference at their place, all you can do is ask your girls to play hard, and overall, we did that," he said. "I'm happy with our effort, attitude, and grit."

The Teays Valley (4-8, 2-3) will look to bounce back from this loss as they prepare to face Logan (2-8, 0-5) on Friday. "It's going to be a good matchup," said Coach Younkin. "They're going to be coming in hungry, and we need to be ready."

Game Day Preview: Teays Valley vs Pickerington Central 1/14

By Jacob Merideth, TV Athletics Beat Writer

Rematch of Last Year's District Championship Game on Tap as Teays Valley Visits Pickerington Central

The Pickerington Central Tigers will host the Teays Valley Vikings at Pickerington Central High School in a rematch of last year's district championship game. This time around, both teams will be meeting as members of the OCC Buckeye division.

Pickerington Central, despite losing Division I state Player of the Year and McDonald's All-American Berry Wallace to Illinois, is expected to continue its winning ways. The Tigers return four starters from last year's squad, including senior guards Rylee Bess and Faith King, junior forward Blossom Wallace, and sophomore guard Zoe Coleman. Additionally, Central has added junior forward London Johnson, a transfer from Canal Winchester, who averaged 18.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 5.0 steals per game last season.

Under the guidance of Coach Johnathan Hedgepeth, who is in his first season of his second stint with the Tigers, Pickerington Central is poised to make another deep postseason run. Hedgepeth previously led the Tigers to a 170-42 record from 2013-21, including a state title in 2018 and a runner-up finish in 2019.

Teays Valley, meanwhile, enters the contest with a 4-8 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the OCC. The Vikings are looking to bounce back from a challenging 50-33 loss to Newark on Thursday, where they faced difficulty in managing the Wildcats' strong offensive play. Cami Robins led Teays Valley with 17 points, while Tessa Horsley added a team-high five rebounds and Addie Keplar chipped in with five points.

I will be in Pickerington for the Tigers and hosting the Vikings; tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm at Pickerington Central High School.

"Wildcats' Strong Fourth Quarter Secures Win Over Vikings"

Ashville-Newark's strong fourth quarter proves to be too much for Teays Valley to overcome, and they fall to the visiting Wildcats 50-33 behind Cami Robins 17 points.

The game was closely contested in the first half, with Teays Valley outscoring Newark 13-12 in the second quarter to narrow the deficit to 27-23 at halftime. After the break, the Wildcats pulled away, led by Calli Geller's 12-point second-half performance. Geller's surge included a three-pointer, a jumper, and a free throw, while Emma Quakenbush added 4 points, and Addi Hall contributed to put the game on ice in the fourth.

Cami Robins scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead Teays Valley. Tessa Horsley grabbed a team-high five rebounds, and Addie Keplar added five points. The Wildcats were led by Calli Geller's impressive 25-point performance, which included 8 field goals and 8-11 free throws. Emma Quakenbush added 12 points, including two three-pointers, while Leah Eckenrode contributed 11 points.

The game was closely contested in the first half, with Teays Valley controlling the second quarter and outscoring Newark 13-12. However, the Wildcats pulled away in the second half, led by Geller's dominant performance.

Teays Valley 4-8, 3-3 will travel to Bloom-Carroll Saturday, 1/11, to take on the Bulldogs in an old MSL showdown, Newark (9-2, 4-1) will host Reynoldsburg on Tuesday, 1/14.

Coaches Thoughts:

"Honestly, we're a three-quarter team. We consistently have one quarter that hurts us. Tonight was no exception. After a slow start, trailing 10-2 in the first quarter, we composed ourselves and played well. I was proud of how the team responded to adversity, calming down and executing our game plan. However, in the fourth quarter, we struggled with ball control, holding onto it a bit too long, which exposed our youth and inexperience. Despite this, I'm proud of our fight. We pushed a strong Newark team, who's 4-1 in the conference, to the limit. We had our chances, and that's all we can ask for, especially with our young team."

One area we need to improve is our communication on the court. Cami (Robins) does a great job, but we need more players to step up, be vocal, and take charge. We need that fighter mentality, where someone says, 'We're not letting this happen.' As coaches, we can say it, but it's different when it comes from a teammate.- TV Coach Trevor Younkin

"Circleville's Zone Defense Stymies Teays Valley"

Despite a spirited fourth-quarter comeback, the Teays Valley girl's basketball team fell short, dropping a 35-22 decision to Circleville on Saturday in the Brad Morris Classic at Logan Elm.

Addison Edgington sparked Circleville's 13-2 run to start the game. The Tigers dominated the first quarter, setting the tone for the game and maintaining a comfortable lead throughout. Trailing 30-11, Teays Valley staged a 9-point run to trim the deficit. The Vikings played their best basketball of the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring Circleville 13-7.

Tessa Horsley paced Teays Valley with 7 points, while Avery Mann added 4 points. Edgington dominated the paint for Circleville, scoring a game-high 18 points and securing 9 rebounds. Maddie Blakeman chipped in with 6 points, and Maddux Bigam added 4 points.

Edgington and Mann took home player-of-the-game awards for their respective teams. Teays Valley will return to the court on January 7, facing Grove City.

Coaches Thought:

"I'm proud of our team's effort, but we struggled against Circleville's 2-3 zone. We don't see that defense often in the OCC, and it showed. Despite limited practice time over the holiday break, we tried to prepare, but it's tough to replicate game situations in practice.

We've analyzed our stats, and we usually win when we lead or tie at the end of a quarter. Our defense has been a strength, and we're working to create chaos with different looks, including man-to-man, zones, and presses. This is a learning experience for our young team, and we'll use it to improve. We’ll be ready for Grove City on January 7, which also runs a 2-3 zone.

I want to commend everyone involved in the Brad Morris Classic. It's an honor to be part of this tournament, which celebrates Brad's legacy as a reporter and his impact on our community," said TV coach Trevor Younkin.

“Karshner and Horsley Steer the Vikings Past the Indians”

In a renewed rivalry between former Mid-State League foes, Teays Valley's dynamic duo of Tessa Horsley and Areyana Karshner propelled the Vikings to a 44-31 victory over Canal Winchester in an OCC-Buckeye contest.

Trailing 10-5 to start the game, Teays Valley went on a 7-point run to take the lead in the second quarter as Karshner knocked down a three-pointer to help her team outscore Canal Winchester 13-7 before the half. Cooper McManaway' also had 6 points in the second quarter to assist in building a 23-17 halftime lead. Teays Valley's defense also held the Indians to four points in the third quarter. The Vikings then used a 14-1 run to extend their lead. In the fourth quarter, Canal shot 4/5 from the free throw line, but Tessa Horsley's four points and a Karshner three-pointer helped the Vikings secure a 44-31 victory over the Indians.

Horsley and Karshner paced the Vikings with 11 points each. Cooper McManaway added 9 points, Avery Mann scored 6 and grabbed 5 boards, Cami Robins contributed 4 points, and Addie Keplar chipped in 3. Isabelle Kemper led Canal Winchester with 10 points, while Mya Brown and Pierce Cephas each hit multiple three-pointers. Cephas added 9 points, Brown scored 6, and Brooke McNeely, Lily Kissinger, and Jas Johnson each contributed 2 points.

The Vikings will return to action on Friday, December 27, at Westfall High School, where they will face Logan Elm in the Brad Morris Holiday Classic; tip-off is set for 5:00 pm.

Coaches thought:

"Being a young team, I'm glad we're in situations where we're seeing different things to build our experience. Obviously, Canal had some really good seniors that helped them out. We are just so young, and to be able to manage a lead, take care of the lead, and keep a lead—that's a huge thing. The bottom line is we are still learning things. It's going to take some time, but I'm proud of their effort, and I'm proud of their fight and ability to go through and win this game. The keyword is these kids need a little bit of time off. They just had midterms, studying and battling in the classroom and battling on the court. We've been game, practice, game, practice for a while now. We need some time off, and I'm proud of them—they deserve this time off. We're going to give them tomorrow and Sunday off, and we're coming back on Monday, then a shootaround on Tuesday before Christmas, and then we'll get ready for a county rival against Logan Elm on the 27th," TV coach Trevor Younkin said.

Game Day Preview: TVHS Girls Basketball vs. Canal Winchester

Teays Valley and Canal Winchester Set to Meet on the Court as OCC Mates

After spending decades as rivals in the Mid-State League, Teays Valley and Canal Winchester are set to face off in an OCC-Buckeye division matchup.

The Vikings hold a 3-5 overall record with a 2-2 league mark, with wins over division rivals Logan (46-39) and most recently Groveport-Madison (57-23). The Vikings' defense held Groveport to just 23 points on 10-of-28 shooting from the field. Teays Valley forced the Cruisers to 16 turnovers and out-boarded their host 29-28.

The Vikings were led by a balanced scoring attack, with Cami Robins steering the team with 17 points. Tessa Horsley cleaned the glass and led the contest with 14 rebounds while also chipping in 11 points. Addie Keplar contributed nine points, going 2/2 from the three-point line, followed by Areyana Karshner with seven points. The Vikings up their record to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the OCC-Buckeye division. They will be back on the court Friday, 12/20, at Canal Winchester (1-4, 1-2) to renew an old MSL rivalry. The Indians fell in a division game to Newark (12/17) 73-47.

Coaches Thought:

"I was very happy with the way we played from start to finish," Younkin said. "I told them we had to play aggressively from the beginning to the end. We've been working on transition offense. and trying to make things happen in some areas, but I was overly impressed with the entire team. It was a team effort getting down to court, executing, working the ball, and getting the best shot."

Younkin praised his team's shot selection, saying it was "excellent" on the night. He also talked about the importance of building and not getting comfortable.

"We got to build on what we've done right and not forget that," Younkin said. "We can't just be happy with one game; let's try to go into the next and be ready to go. It's nice that we have two days of practice to take the opportunity to fix a couple of things," Younkin said. "We need some rest. Our brains are working. We are mentally where we need to be, but we just need some rest physically," said TV coach Trevor Younkin.

The Vikings and Cruisers are hungry for another OCC-Buckeye win.

The Teays Valley Vikings are gearing up to face off against the Groveport Cruisers in an OCC-Buckeye division matchup on Wednesday. Both teams are looking to secure their second OCC-Buckeye win of the season.

Groveport has faced a division-only schedule, holding a 1-2 record, with their sole win coming against Lancaster on Friday (44-41) on their home court. The Cruisers have struggled on the road, dropping games to Canal Winchester (63-51) and Newark (73-46).

Teays Valley, meanwhile, holds a 2-5 overall record, with their wins coming against Logan (46-39) in OCC-Buckeye division play and Dublin Coffman (36-30) in non-league action. The Vikings have dropped non-league games to Hilliard Bradley, Fairfield Union, and most recently, Minford at Battle in the 740. They also hold a 1-2 division record, with losses to Lancaster and Reynoldsburg.

I will be heading over to Hamilton Road to cover the Vikings and Cruisers; tip-off is set for 7:30 pm from Groveport.

Game Day Preview: TVHS Girls Basketball vs. Minford 12/15

“The Vikings are set to ‘Battle in the 740” with the  ”

The Teays Valley girls basketball team is gearing up to face Minford in the Battle in the 740 from Waller Gymnasium on the campus of Shawnee State University.

The Vikings enter the matchup with a 2-4 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the OCC-Buckeye. Tessa Horsley has been a consistent bright spot for Teays Valley, leading the team in scoring and rebounding. Against Fairfield Union, Horsley scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The Vikings have secured league and non-league wins against Logan and Dublin Coffman, respectively. However, they dropped their most recent outing against Reynoldsburg, 55-42. Horsley scored 16 points, while Cami Robins added 10 points in the loss.

Minford, meanwhile, has a 1-2 record. The Falcons have suffered losses to the Viking's former MSL mates, the Aces of Amanda-Clearcreek (57-52) and Athens (55-45), but secured a win against North Adams (54-35). Minford is a young team, similar to the Vikings, but possesses a size advantage, which could pose a challenge for Teays Valley.

"Minford is a young team just like us, but the thing is they got a couple of bigs, something that we don't have," Coach Trevor Younkin said. "But they're going through some growing pains as well."

Coach Younkin emphasized the benefits of competing in the Battle in the 740, citing the opportunity to face an unfamiliar opponent in a unique environment.

"The tournament director thought it'd be a great game for us and them, two young teams that should be successful in the next couple of years to battle it out earlier as sophomores and juniors," Coach Younkin explained. "It's down on the river. You want to play teams that don't know you, have never seen you, don't know much about you, and to be down there to play in something like that. It's going to be fun and exciting for the girls, and we are looking forward to it and playing against a traditionally good Minford basketball team," Coach Younkin said.

The Vikings and the Falcons will tip off at 12:30 p.m. Our friends at SOSA (Southern Ohio Sports Authority) will cover all games from Shawnee State.

“Vikings’ Late Surge Falls Short Against Raiders”

Reynoldsburg Raiders Pull Away from Teays Valley Girls Basketball 55-42.

The Teays Valley Vikings girl's basketball team fell in a 55-42 decision to the visiting Reynoldsburg Raiders on Friday, despite a strong effort from Tessa Horsley. Horsley scored a team-high 16 points, but the Vikings couldn't overcome Reynoldsburg's balanced scoring attack. The Raiders led 38-25 at halftime and extended their advantage to 53-31 before Teays Valley mounted a late surge. The Vikings outscored Reynoldsburg 13-7 in the fourth quarter, with Cami Robins adding eight points in the second half. Teays Valley dominated in the paint, finishing 15-25 from inside the three-point line, and outscored the Raiders 31-26 in the 2nd half.

Avery Mann led the Vikings' rebounding effort with nine boards, as Teays Valley collected 31 rebounds. The Vikings also passed the ball well, dishing out nine assists. Robbins added 10 points, Addie Keplar scored seven points, Mann contributed six points, and Cooper McManaway chipped in three points for Teays Valley. Reynoldsburg was led by Sa'Mahn Johnson's 15-point performance, while Malaya Collins added 12 points. Kendyl Bowens and Naliyah Knight scored seven points apiece, and Naomi Merriweather contributed six points.

The Vikings (2-3, 1-3) will be back in action on Sunday, 12/15, from Shawnee State University against Minford (1-2) for the Battle in the 740.

Coach’s Thought:

"When you win the second, third, and fourth quarters combined, you have a pretty good team. Unfortunately, our first quarter was a different story. I take responsibility for that—we tried a new defense, the Triangle Two, and it didn't pay off. We knew Reynoldsburg had two outstanding players, and we tried to force them to beat us with their other players. However, it backfired, and we had to adapt to a man-to-man defense. Despite our struggles, I'm proud of how our team responded. We made some runs, but Reynoldsburg's easy layups hurt us. This is all part of our growing pains, and we'll learn from it. We need to move forward and fix our mistakes quickly.

Standouts:

I have to credit our outstanding sophomores, Tessa (Horsley) and Cami (Robbins). They have a high basketball IQ, take coaching well, and understand what needs to be done. I want them to know it's okay to speak up and lead their teammates. Addie Keplar had a big night with seven points; she has an aggressive mentality. She's not the biggest player, but she fights every night and doesn't back down from challenges. Avery Mann also played big for us tonight, scoring six points and grabbing nine rebounds. We need to keep battling." TV coach Trevor Younkin said

"Raiders and Vikings Clash in a Friday Night OCC-Buckeye Battle"

The Teays Valley Vikings girls basketball team is set to host Reynoldsburg. The Vikings are looking to rebound from a 52-39 non-league loss to Fairfield Union on Wednesday.

Teays Valley has opened the season 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the OCC-Buckeye. Tessa Horsley has consistently led the Vikings. Against Fairfield Union, Horsley scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The blue and gold have a league win against Logan and a non-league win over Dublin Coffman. The Vikings will look to bottle up Reynoldsburg's scorers, which features a balanced attack with multiple shooting threats.

Reynoldsburg has started the season with a 3-3 overall record and is 1-1 in the OCC-Buckeye. The Raiders have wins over Shaker Heights’ Laurel Gators, league foe Canal Winchester, and the Whippets of Shelby High School for Battle in the 614. Sa'Mahn Johnson has been a standout for the Raiders, earning MVP honors in the Battle in the 614 with a 25-point performance. The Raiders' lone league loss was against the defending league and district champions, the Pickerington Central Tigers, and a non-league loss against Harvest Prep the Friday after Thanksgiving.

TVHS Girls Basketball vs. Fairfield Union 12/11

“Fairfield Union Soars Past Teays Valley, 52-39”

Ashville—Teays Valley welcomed a familiar foe to their home court on Wednesday, hosting former Mid-State League-Buckeye Division rival Fairfield Union. Despite a standout effort from Tessa Horsley, the Vikings ultimately fell to the Falcons, 52-39.

The Vikings trailed 28-16 at halftime but mounted a surge in the third quarter, led by Cami Robbins. However, Thompson's 10 points in the third quarter helped the Falcons pull away.

In the fourth quarter, Horsley kept the Vikings in the game, scoring six points of her 12 points in the period, but the Falcons' quartet of scorers—Thompson, Maddi Mitchell, Maycee Martindill, and Smeck—helped the Falcons fly away with a non-league victory.

Despite the loss, Teays Valley finished 13-25 from inside the arc. Areyanna Karshner contributed 11 points, Cooper McManaway scored eight points, Cami Robins added six, and Addie Kepler chipped in two points. Horsley scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Falcons' balanced attack. Fairfield Union's Christian Thompson led all scorers with 26 points, while Taylor Smeck added 12 points.

Coaches Thought:

"I don't think we played to our potential tonight. We had four or five possessions that really hurt us, and Fairfield Union took full advantage. They executed when we had turnovers and miscommunications on defense, allowing their best player to slip away and score easy buckets. We knew she was talented, but we can't let her dominate like that. We're still a young team, navigating growing pains and learning our chemistry as a unit. But I'm confident we'll get there. This is a talented team, and we're learning as we go. Looking ahead to Friday's game against Reynoldsburg, we'll face a very athletic team that will push us to match their intensity and speed. To succeed, we need to control the tempo, work the ball to our advantage, and capitalize on the opportunities they give us. Whether they try to trap us or speed us up, we must stay focused and play our game.’ said TV coach Trevor Younkin.

The Vikings (2-3, 1-1) will be back at it on Friday to host Reynoldsburg (3-3, 1-1) on Friday to resume OCC-Buckeye division play.

“The Lancaster Golden Gales Set to Host the Teays Valley Vikings in a Friday OCC-Buckeye Matchup”

The Lancaster Golden Gales, led by eighth-year coach Dusty Miller, are gearing up to host the Teays Valley Lady Vikings in an Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division matchup. Lancaster has a seasoned roster, with five returning letter-winners, including seniors Emalene Chevalier, Ky Pugh, and Lily Stoughton.

Coach Miller expressed enthusiasm about his team's blend of experience and youth. "We bring back a very experienced team with a mix of young players to learn from our experienced players," Miller said. "The team is focused on accomplishing our goals and enjoying being around each other daily."

Lancaster has started the season 1-2, securing a 51-38 win over Walnut Ridge, dropping games to Pickerington North, and suffering a league loss to Newark. The Golden Gales will look to bounce back against Teays Valley, which is coming off its first OCC victory, a 46-39 win over Logan. Cami Robins led the Lady Vikings to victory, while Tessa Horsley performed strongly in the team's earlier loss to Hilliard Bradley. The Vikings are 1-1 on the season.

TVHS Girls Basketball at Logan 12/03

“Lady Vikings fend off the Chiefs for a 46-39 victory and secure the school's first OCC win in basketball.”

The Teays Valley Lady Vikings girls basketball team built a 12-point lead and held off a late surge from Logan to secure a 46-39 victory on the road Tuesday.

Cami Robins led the way for Teays Valley, scoring 15 points to pace the Lady Vikings. Tessa Horsley added nine points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, while Addie Helwagen and Areyanna Karshner both chipped in six points. Teays Valley dominated the paint, outrebounding Logan 28-17. The Lady Vikings also had a strong day shooting from inside the arc, finishing 10-18 on two-point attempts.

Logan's Makenzie Daubenmire led the Lady Chiefs with 13 points, including a late three-pointer that cut the deficit to nine. Ryann Landis added seven points, and Emily Hinton scored 11 points off the bench.

The Lady Vikings took control of the game early, outscoring Logan 15-9 in the first quarter. Teays Valley maintained a comfortable lead throughout, never trailing in the contest.

With the win, Teays Valley improves to 1-1 on the season, while Logan falls to 1-1. The Lady Vikings will travel to Lancaster on Friday for another OCC Buckeye matchup against the Golden Gales, who fell tonight to Newark 67-32.

Coaches thought:

“We showed great tenacity tonight, especially with the referees allowing us to play a physical game. We had a couple of injuries, but hopefully, we'll be okay. I'm proud of how we handled the physicality of an OCC game. It's ironic that the two newest schools to the OCC, Teays Valley and Logan, went at each other like that—it was a fun game to be a part of. Logan threw us a curveball by showing us a 1-3 zone defense that we hadn't seen on film. Given our youth, I thought we adjusted well to the situation. Our tenacity, getting on the floor, being physical, taking the hits, and holding our composure were all huge factors in our win tonight. We've got a challenging stretch ahead of us, with eight games in 14 days. We've been preparing for this since our game against Hilliard Bradley before Thanksgiving. We took the time off to fix what went wrong in that game and applied those corrections tonight. Now, we're 1-0 in the conference and 1-1 overall. Next up, we've got Lancaster on Friday night. Dusty (Miller Lancaster HC) is going to have his team well-prepared, and they'll be defensively solid. We'll need to be ready to adjust to whatever defense they throw at us. Then, we've got the Thrill in the Ville on Sunday against Dublin Coffman. This is what we've been working towards—the opportunity to compete against other teams. We've done practicing, and now, it's time to go out and play. We must have the ability to adjust on the fly, use what we learned, and hopefully get on a bit of a roll. Lancaster is a fantastic team, so we'll need to be ready to play on Friday night."  Said coach Trevor Younkin
