Teays Valley Football Players Earn All-Ohio Honors

(OPSW Release)—The Ohio Prep Sportswriters released the Division II All-Ohio football teams on Wednesday, and two Teays Valley football players were recognized.

Tristian Graham, a senior offensive lineman, was named to the Division II All-Ohio First Team Offense. Graham was a key contributor to the Vikings' success this season, not only offensively but defensively as well.

In addition to Tristan Graham's first-team honor, his brother Peter, a sophomore, also received honorable mention recognition as a linebacker. Peter Graham was a boulder in the Vikings' defense in their run to the regional semi-finals.

Congratulations to Teays Valley football and the Graham brothers!

TVHS Football vs Massillon Washington 11/15

"Teays Valley Falls to Massillon, Ends Season with Pride"

Massillon brings Teays Valley’s clipper to port as the Vikings fall to the Tigers 48-14 in the regional semifinals at JD Sulsberger Stadium in Zanesville, Ohio.

First-Quarter Surge:

Teays Valley won the coin toss, but their initial drive stalled, resulting in a punt. Massillon Washington seized the opportunity, and Tyler Hackenbracht sparked the Tigers' offense with an impressive 50-yard punt return, setting up their first score. The extra point attempt was successful, giving Massillon Washington a 7-0 lead. The Tigers continued to build momentum as Mylen Lenix scored on a 7-yard touchdown run, increasing the lead to 14-0. As the first quarter came to a close, Jalen Slaughter connected with Demari Clemons on an 83-yard touchdown pass, extending Massillon Washington's lead to 28-0.

Teays Valley's Resilience:

Brady Farmer's 6-yard touchdown pass to Luke Burgett showcased the Vikings' determination. Despite facing a strong Massillon defense, Teays Valley continued to fight, with Tyler Tietz returning a fumble 42 yards for a touchdown.

By the numbers:

In the matchup between Teays Valley and Massillon Washington, Teays Valley's Brady Farmer led the passing game with 31 completions on 52 attempts, totaling 114 yards and one touchdown. Teays Valley’s completes the year:

The Vikings conclude their season with an 8-5 record, ending their season after playing in the regional semifinal for the first time since 1998. Playoff Showdown in Zanesville: Teays Valley vs. Massillon Washington 11/14

The stage is set at Sulsberger’s Stadium for an epic showdown between the defending Division II state champions, the Massillon Washington Tigers, and the Teays Valley Vikings. Coach Nate Moore leads the Tigers; the Tigers boast an impressive 109-22 record in his eighth year at the helm.

Tigers' dominant season:

Coming off a convincing 31-7 win over Canal Winchester, Massillon Washington has amassed 412 points (34.3 points per game) while limiting opponents to 143 points (11.9 points per game). The Tigers' rushing offense has been unstoppable, with 1947 yards (6.2 avg) and 31 touchdowns. Ja'Meir Gamble (1400 yards, 19 TDs) and Mylen Lenix (326 yards, 6 TDs) lead the charge. Through the air, Jalen Slaughter has thrown for 2095 yards, with Braylyn Toles (590 yards, 6 TDs) and Jacques Carter (547 yards, 8 TDs) as top targets.

Teays Valley looks to invade Blue Devil Land:

Coach Brian Cross's Teays Valley Vikings (8-4) aim to dethrone the champions. The Vikings have allowed and scored 258 points on the year. Carson Payne (208 rushes, 846 yards, 11 TDs) and Brady Farmer (77/144, 828 yards, 6 TDs, 2 INTs) spearhead the Vikings' balanced offense. Cavin McDowell (20 receptions, 247 yards, 2 TDs) and Carson Payne (11, 151 yards) are top receivers. This is the first time Teays Valley has had to win twice and be in the third round; the first time was in 1998 when the blue and gold were under the direction of Mr. John Keel.

Note:

Teays Valley head coach Brian Cross was at the helm of Canton McKinnley from 2003-2007 and has three wins over Massillon in his career (2003, 2004, 2005). 2005 both teams were undefeated, and the Bulldogs routed the Tigers 30-8. They would meet again in the playoffs at the Rubber Bowl, and McKinley fell to Massillon 21-3.

Special Teams and Defense:

Maxwell Spencer's perfect PAT record and 2/2 FGs anchor Teays Valley's special teams. Griffin Gray's kick return average (25.9) and Peter Graham's multiple interceptions lead the defense, also anchored by Carson Payne.

TVHS Football vs Worthington Kilbourne 11/8

"Viking Pride Reaches New Heights"

The Teays Valley Vikings edge the Worthington Kilbourne Wolves 10-7 and make history with the first third-round playoff berth since 1998.

The Vikings drew first blood with a 31-yard field goal by Maxwell Spencer, capping off their opening drive to make it 3-0 with 8:35 remaining in the first. The Wolves' initial drive stalled, resulting in a punt. Teays Valley's subsequent possession ended in a three-and-out, but their defense stifled Kilbourne at their 5-yard line, maintaining the 3-0 lead at quarter's end. An unnecessary roughness call extended Kilbourne's drive in the second, but the Viking defense held strong, forcing a punt to Teays Valley's 15-yard line with 7:44 remaining. The Wolves and the Vikings traded punches, then Kilbourne’s Luke Page rumbled in for a touchdown to put the Wolves ahead 7-3 with 1:14 left and a short Teays Valley drive took us into the half with the Vikings trailing the Wolves.

The Wolves opening drive of the half resulted in a punt, which Teays Valley mirrored with a punt of their own and then received a punt back from the Wolves. Peter Graham took advantage and bounced to a touchdown, coupled with Spencer's PAT that gave the Vikings a 10-7 lead with 2:41 remaining. Teays Valley maintained this advantage at the third quarter's end. The start of the fourth quarter saw Kilbourne threaten, reaching the Viking 5-yard line, but Teays Valley forced a turnover, regaining possession. Teays Valley’s drive ended in a Maxwell Spencer punt that pinned Kilbourne at their 6-yard line. The Wolves drove down the field to be forced to a 31-yard field goal attempt that sailed wide right for Teays Valley to take over with 2:03 remaining, and The Vikings iced the clock to secure the historic 10-7 victory.

Stats:

Maxwell Spencer: 1/1 field goal (31 yards), 1/1 PAT

Peter Graham: 1 rushing touchdown

Luke Page (Kilbourne): 1 rushing touchdown

Teays Valley Defense: 1 turnover forced, 1 punt block

Coaches Thoughts:

“The defense was unbelievable tonight and held them to only seven. We played great defense all night, and I give the defensive staff all the props—they really worked their butts off."

Cross looked ahead to the Vikings' next challenge:

"We get to play one more game, and we're playing against not only one of the premier teams in the state but also one of the premier teams in the country. It's going to be a challenge, and this should be the goal of high school—to someday get to this point. We're going to get a chance to go up against that type of program and show how tough we are." Teays Valley head coach Brian Cross captured his 260th career win as a head coach.

Next Week:

Teays Valley faces Massillon-Washington at a neutral site at Zanesville High School, marking the program's second-ever third-round playoff appearance.

Briggs Analysis on the Vikings:

"Obviously, Teays Valley is an OCC school that can arguably be identified as the toughest league in Ohio. They are extremely talented with quickness at the skill positions. Their quarterback is big, talented, and has a great arm. Their depth is going to be a problem for us. The running game is a power running combined with inside and outside zones. Their offensive line has nice size, and they block extremely well. Defensively, they have size and depth, and they tackle very well. Very disciplined team that doesn't make any mistakes. I haven't seen a flag in any of the games I have scouted. We have our work cut out for us. We must play a mistake-free game to even have a chance to come out on top.”

Coaches Thoughts:

"It means a lot to us to have a winning season, and we've achieved two of our main goals: competing in the OCC and reaching six wins overall. We're building a culture of physical and mental toughness to compete in this league every year, and our strength coach has made a huge difference; our kids are bigger and stronger than last year. Tonight, our seniors led the way, especially up front. Brady (Farmer) shook off a tough first half, and our defense pitched a shutout in the second half. But when a running back or a quarterback has a good game its because of the offensive line, and we’ve had 4 seniors up their all year who has done a great job for us, we're proud of our progress and excited about what's to come," said TV coach Brian Cross.

Something to note:

Teays Valley’s kicker Max Spencer is perfect on PAT’s (point after attempts on the season).

Friday Night Football Preview: Teays Valley Vikings (5-4, 3-3) at Logan Chieftains (1-8, 0-6)

The Teays Valley Vikings aim to bounce back from last week's loss and secure their sixth win as they face the Logan Chieftains. Coach Brian Cross's squad has already clinched a home playoff game but is eager to build momentum. Logan, led by Coach Mike Eddy, seeks its first-ever Ohio Capital Conference (OCC) win.

The Vikings dominate the all-time series 9-2, winning the last two meetings, including a 28-6 victory in 2023. Teays Valley's offense averages 169.1 rushing yards and 78.2 passing yards per game, led by quarterback Brady Farmer and running back Carson Payne.

Logan's offense, averaging 15 points and 244 yards per game, will rely on sophomore quarterback Carson Tootle, running back Kaden Morgan, and receiver Jack Walsh. The Chieftains' defense allows 20 points and 247 yards per game, with nine returning starters.

Key matchups include:

Teays Valley's ground game vs. Logan's defense

Logan's passing attack vs. Teays Valley Secondary

Turnovers and field position will be crucial

Logan’s head coach, Coach Eddy, says:

“They remind me of the team we played against a couple of years ago—where up front they were physically dominating. That year they were dominating up front, and they are that kind of team again. Over the years we have played them, we have been really competitive with a chance to win the football game, but that year was different.”

“They have a very talented running back and an efficient quarterback who doesn’t make mistakes. They are a downhill, in-your-face football team. Number 55 (Graham) plays center and defensive tackle, and he might be the best lineman in the entire league. He just stands out on every play on film.”

“They are one of the few teams in this conference who don’t play man-to-man. They play with a six-man box. They are a base 4-4 cover-3 football team, similar to us. They’ll play a little man-to-man, but that’s not who they are. They have a system they believe in, and they will live and die in that system.”

“They don’t do a lot of things, but what they do, they do well. Because we have some recent history with them, hopefully, it will give our kids some confidence that they can compete. I hope we get to see the best our kids have to offer on Senior Night" Quote and all Logan Football information from LoganFootball.com’s Spencer Waugh.

Vikings' Valiant Effort Falls Short Against Pickerington Central

The Teays Valley Vikings fought fiercely but ultimately succumbed to Pickerington Central's potent offense, losing 49-23 on October 18, 2024.

The first half saw a closely contested battle, with the Vikings trailing by just seven points at halftime. Carson Payne's two rushing touchdowns and Maxwell Spencer's precise kicking kept Teays Valley within striking distance.

However, the Tigers pulled away in the third quarter, led by Sherone White Jr.'s 98-yard kickoff return touchdown and Kaejuan Alexander's 3-yard rushing touchdown. Pickerington Central's dominant performance in the second half sealed the win.

In a high-scoring affair, Pickerington Central outpaced Teays Valley 49-23, fueled by standout performances from Sherone White Jr. (2 rushes, 65 yards, 1 TD; 1 KR TD) and Gerald Banks (6 rushes, 35 yards, 3 TDs). Despite Carson Payne's impressive showing for Teays Valley (31 rushes, 131 yards, 2 TDs) and Maxwell Spencer's perfect 1/1 field goal performance from 37 yards, the Vikings couldn't keep pace with the Tigers' potent offense, ultimately surrendering the decisive victory.

Game Stats:

Passing Yards: Teays Valley 128, Pickerington Central 123

TVHS Football Preview: Pickerington Central Tigers 10/17

The Pickerington Central Tigers (5-2) will travel to Ashville to take on the Teays Valley Vikings (6-2) for a pivotal Ohio Capital Conference Buckeye division matchup.

Pickerington Central's Impressive Resume:

The Tigers are scoring 312 points (39 average) while allowing 136 points (17 average). Under second-year head coach Jeff Lomonico, Pickerington Central seeks its seventh consecutive conference title.

Key Players to Watch for Pickerington Central:

Pickerington Central's roster features several talented players, including quarterback Rocco Williams, running back Kaejuan Alexander, and wide receiver Sherone White Jr. The Tigers' defense is anchored by defensive end Myles Harrison and defensive tackle Mustapha Butler. Other notable players include Mike Jones, Nick Klipfer, and Jah'Marione McAllister.

Teays Valley's Challenge:

The Vikings face a daunting task in stifling Pickerington Central's high-powered offense and exposing defensive vulnerabilities. Teays Valley's ground game, led by Evan Maynard, will be put to the test against the Tigers' stout defense. However, the Vikings received a boost with the return of Ethan Schwalbauch, potentially one of their leading rushers and tacklers, who were sidelined against Newark. The blue and gold are looking to steer the ship back on course from the recent defeat at the hands of Newark; they have a three-headed trio of backs, Carson Payne, Griffen Gray, and the emergence of sophomore Evan Maynard; he had 29 carries, for 135 yards and a touchdown last Friday. Quarterback Brady Farmer and receiver Cavin McDowell will also be key players to watch.

Conference Implications:

With a victory, Pickerington Central can clinch a share of the Buckeye Division title. Meanwhile, Teays Valley, having already secured a playoff berth, according to Joe Eitel, aims to solidify its chances for a home opening-round game with a win this week or next against Logan.

TVHS Football Preview: Canal Winchester a Rivalry Renewed: 10/3

The stage is set for a thrilling matchup between Teays Valley and Canal Winchester on Friday, October 4th, at Vikings Stadium. The Vikings (5-1, 3-0 OCC) and Indians (4-2, 2-1 OCC) renew their longstanding rivalry, reigniting a fierce competition that dates back to their days in the MSL Buckeye.

Canal Winchester Rolls into Ashville on a High Note:

The Indians, led by Coach Jake Kuhner in his third year, are riding momentum from their 31-7 win over Newark. Reining in the Win: Teays Valley defeats Groveport as the Vikings Edge the Cruisers in a rainy OCC Buckeye Thriller, 21-14

In the Vikings homecoming game, Teays Valley struck first, courtesy of Max Spencer's 37-yard field goal, taking a 3-0 lead with 8:42 remaining in the first quarter. Spencer added another field goal, extending the Vikings' lead to 6-0.

Groveport struggled to respond, punting after a three-and-out. The Vikings then attempted a field goal, but Maxwell Spencer's kick sailed wide, allowing the Cruisers to take over, still trailing 6-0. In the second quarter, Teays Valley's homecoming king Gabe Zedlitz made a crucial stop, stuffing the Groveport keeper on 4th and 1, giving the Vikings possession at midfield. However, the Cruisers seized the lead late in the quarter, as the rain started falling Jalen Joyce punched in a three-yard run, and Christian Gutierrez-Sanchez added the extra point with 1:08 remaining. Groveport took a 7-6 advantage into halftime.

The game's first completion came in the third quarter, with Groveport's Jeremiah Moore hauling in a pass from Baker Bowden with 8:22 remaining. Moore scored a 25-yard touchdown, extending the Cruisers' lead to 14-6. A Teays Valley roughing-the-kicker penalty prolonged the Groveport drive, but Peter Graham's sack ended the quarter, stifling the Cruisers' scoring  Trailing 14-6, the Vikings rallied in the fourth quarter. Brady Farmer connected with Carson Payne for an 8-yard touchdown pass, followed by a two-point conversion pass to Bryce Ferrell, tying the game 14-14 with 7:30 remaining. The Vikings sealed the victory with 1:24 left, as Carson Payne burst into the end zone on a 3-yard run, and Maxwell Spencer's PAT secured the 21-14 win, slamming the barn door on the Cruisers' comeback hopes.

Coaches Thought: It was a physical and spiritual performance by the offense, defense, and special teams. Once again, we were good at all three phases of the game, and that's what it takes to be a team like this. This is a fantastic football team, and we knew we were tough from the very beginning. The fact that we only scored six points in the first quarter wasn't good enough for us, so we needed more. Luckily, our defense did an outstanding job, storing enough points to win. We knew it would be a tough game because they're a tough football team. But we didn't win this game on that field tonight; we won it out in the weight room this past summer and winter. That's how we won tonight—through our physicality. We're trying to build a tough, physical culture and show everyone in Ashville what it's like to have an OCC community.” TV Coach Brian Cross said.

The Vikings (5-1, 3-0) host Canal Winchester (4-2, 2-1) next week, the Indians beat Newark 31-7 Friday.

TVHS Football Mid-Season Review 9/25

As the week 5 halfway point approaches, the Teays Valley Vikings hold a promising 4-1 record overall, and after two OCC Buckeye games, they hold a 2-0 division record, showing their resilience and physicality.

The season began with a tough 42-7 loss to Grove City, despite Spike Woods' standout performance (146 rushing yards, 1 TD) and quarterback Brady Farmer's 10/20 for 69 yards.

Undeterred, the Vikings secured their first win in Carroll since 2018, defeating Bloom-Carroll 28-10 in Week 2. Woods rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown, while Farmer threw for 98 yards and Tyler Mathews sealed the victory with a pick-six.

In Week 3, Teays Valley dominated Watkins Memorial 35-12, with Woods rushing for 174 yards and a touchdown and Farmer throwing three touchdowns. Cavin McDowell caught four passes for 20 yards and a score.

However, this victory came at a cost, as Woods' junior season was cut short due to injury. Carson Payne stepped up, excelling at running back.

Payne's impressive performance in Week 4's 35-28 win over Lancaster included 91 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and an interception return for a touchdown. Farmer threw for 126 yards and a touchdown.

The Vikings' defense shone in Week 5, shutting down Reynoldsburg 17-7. Farmer threw two touchdown passes, Peter Graham caught one and recovered a fumble, and Westin Gray's interception secured the victory.

Key players Woods, Farmer, Payne, and McDowell have driven the team's success.

Next, Teays Valley hosts the Groveport Cruisers for homecoming on Friday, September 27, in another OCC Buckeye matchup. Stay tuned for live score updates and a post-game article.

Teays Valley at Reynoldsburg 9/20

The Vikings raid Reynoldsburg and win 17-7 as the Defense shuts down the Raiders.

The Teays Valley’s defense and timely offense propelled them to a 17-7 victory over Reynoldsburg, improving their record to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the OCC Buckeye division.

The Vikings drew first blood, capitalizing on a Reynoldsburg fumble recovered at the Raiders' 43-yard line. Quarterback Brady Farmer connected with Peter Graham for a touchdown, and Max Spencer's PAT made it 7-0 Teays Valley. Farmer found Markus Mealy for another score, extending the lead to 14-0 with 1:16 remaining in the first quarter. Reynoldsburg's quarterback was stuffed on a 4th-and-1 sneak from the TV 2-yard line, and the Vikings took over. Despite missing a field goal attempt from the 20-yard line, Teays Valley maintained a 14-0 advantage at halftime.

Reynoldsburg's TJ Green finally broke through in the third quarter with a touchdown pass from Justin Heckman, trimming the deficit to 14-7. However, Westin Gray's interception at the 48-yard line swung momentum back to Teays Valley. Max Spencer sealed the scoring with a 44-yard field goal as the third quarter expired, making it 17-7. In the fourth quarter, Chase Cahill's crushing hit on Reynoldsburg's new quarterback Adam Lubaya forced a fumble recovered by Peter Graham, securing the Vikings' victory.

Coaches Thoughts: “Extremely proud of the way we played, very physical. It was exciting offensively; we were able to run the ball, and we weren't sure we were going to be able to do that against these guys. Defensively, we did outstanding tonight, and our kicking game tonight was pretty solid. And the biggest thing, so far, is that our kids did a heckuva job in the off-season. They got bigger and stronger, which allows us to play more physical and with more confidence. I'm really happy for them. An outstanding job by (Brady) Farmer today, throwing the ball and running the football. He carried the ball a lot more than we ever asked of him, and he ran pretty strong. And that big hit from Chase Cahill was heard all over Reynoldsburg." TV Coach Brian Cross

Next up, Teays Valley (4-1, 2-0) hosts the Groveport Cruisers (4-1, 2-0) for homecoming. I will be in Ashville with score updates and a post-game article next Friday!

Teays Valley football at Reynoldsburg 9/19

OCC Buckeye Division Showdown: Teays Valley Vikings (3-1, 1-0)  at Reynoldsburg Raiders (1-3, 0-1).

The Teays Valley Vikings head to Reynoldsburg to face the Raiders in an Ohio Capital Conference - Buckeye division matchup.

Reynoldsburg, led by first-year head coach Jojuan Armour, aims to snap a six-game losing streak dating back to last season. Armour, a former NFL safety, is determined to revitalize the program. Don’t let the 1-3 record fool you; the Raiders played a tough first four games with an opening win against Dublin Scioto, then losses to Dublin Jerome, Upper Arlington, and Canal Winchester. The game against Canal they let slip away after half when the Indians got their run game going. Their defense has been a bright spot, spearheaded by corner Tre Johnson, linebacker James Slang, and versatile running back/linebacker JoJo Jackson. They've forced four takeaways, including multiple picks. Sophomore quarterback Justin Heckman leads the offense, targeting Za'aire Weaver, TJ Green, Anthony Wasko, and running back Mohammed Cboya. However, the Raiders struggle on third down, converting just 13/43. The Vikings must contain the Raiders' stingy defense and capitalize on their offensive struggles.

I will be on hand for Teays Valley at Reynoldsburg on Friday, 9/20, with score updates and an article to follow.

TVHS Football vs. Lancaster 9/13

Teays Valley calms the Golden Gales in the second half to defeat Lancaster 35-28.

Lancaster dominated the opening quarter, with Hunter Metz scoring on a 1-yard rush and Ethan Graham adding the extra point for a 7-0 lead. The momentum continued in the second quarter, as Kamron Griffith hauled in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Brody Burke, and Ryder Smith returned an interception 42 yards for a score, stretching the lead to 21-7. However, Teays Valley pushed back when Griffin Gray took the Gales to the races with an electrifying 83-yard kickoff return touchdown, and Maxwell Spencer's PAT made it 14-7. The Vikings gained momentum in the third quarter when Cavin McDowell caught a 2-yard touchdown pass and Carson Payne added a 14-yard rushing score, knotting the game at 21-21. In the fourth quarter, Payne intercepted a pass and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown, putting Teays Valley ahead 28-21. Jahmeir Gordon responded with a 30-yard touchdown run on 4th and 3, tying the game at 28-28. Sophomore Carson Payne sealed the victory with a 2-yard rushing touchdown, securing a thrilling 14-point comeback and winning 35-28 for their first OCC-Buckeye division game.

Steering the ship for the Vikings rushers were Carson Payne, who added 16 carries for 91 yards and two scores; Griffin Gray, 1 carry, 8 yards; Brady Farmer, 10 carries, 1 yard; Brandon Travis, 1 carry, -3 yards; Through the air, while Brady Farmer went 8 for 10 with 126 yards and a touchdown with one pick. Leading receivers were Cavin McDowell with 6 receptions, 94 yards, and 1 TD; Peter Graham with 1 reception, 26 yards; Weston Gray with 1 reception, 6 yards; and Teays Valley’s Max Spencer made all four PAT attempts and Lancaster's kicker Graham punted three times for an average of 27.0 yards, while Spencer punted three times with an average of 25.3 yards. Jahmeir Gordon led the rushing attack for Lancaster with 29 carries for 183 yards and a touchdown. Other notable rushers included Hunter Metz with 4 carries, 3 yards, 1 TD; Alex Cade had 1 carry, 8 yards; Devin Wilson had 1 carry, 3 yards.

Coaches Thoughts: “The people that changed that were the kids. It was in their hearts that they were going to come out and play the best football they possibly could play, and they came out and did that, and they played physical, and our defense got a short yardage to work with, and we were able to punch a couple of scores to get back in a game and gain the momentum back. Carson Payne played running back for us and did a tremendous job. At left tackle, Bryce Ferrell came in as another sophomore and then did an outstanding job. Brandon Travis played defensive corner and wide receiver for us, another sophomore, and he did a great job. You’re not supposed to win games like this with that many sophomores playing, and we’re able to get it done tonight, so we’re going to enjoy this win, and we're going to wait and see what Reynoldsburg is all about. There's going to be a ton of athletes over there, and they have played some tough games, and I’m sure it’s going to be a really competitive football game because they have a lot of speed.” TV coach Brian Cross.

Teays Valley (3-1, 1-0) will be back on the field next Friday, September 20th, when they travel to Reynoldsburg (1-3, 0-1) to face off with the Raiders. Reynoldsburg lost to Canal Winchester tonight 9/13 20-14.

TVHS Football Preview vs. Lancaster 9/12

The Teays Valley Vikings are set to kick off their inaugural season on Friday, September 13th, in the Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division, facing off against the Lancaster Golden Gales.

Led by Coach Bryan Schoonover in his fourth season, Lancaster is looking to build on their 5-6 record from 2022. Last year Lancaster and Teays Valley faced off, and the Golden Gales defeated the Vikings 24-17 in a non-league win. Now the Teays will be in the same division as the Gales and look to build off last year when they took a tie into the half, but an injury derailed their hopes and thrust Brady Farmer into the QB role. Farmer is now QB1 for the Vikings.

The Gales have a strong core of returning players, including seniors Conor Christopher, Gavin Framer, Seth Carson, Cody McCoy, and Kelton Fisher. Juniors Brody Burke, Kam Griffith, and Isaiah Sweatte will bring experience to the team. The fresh faces in Gales' lineup are seniors Aaron Banna (OL/DL) and juniors Zavier Havlicek (RB/DB), Nick Evans (OL/DL), Drew Whitlach (WR/DB), Kaleb Santini (WR/DB), Braylon Young (WR/DB), and Mekha Onyedumekwu (OL/DL) joining the team. Additionally, juniors Jahmier Gordon and Lancon Knoch (TE/LB) join the roster, along with sophomores Ryder Smith (WR/DB) and Jack Pompey (WR/DB).

I will be onsite to bring you live updates and scores from the game, with an article to follow for this OCC Buckeye opener on Friday, the 13th!!

Teays Valley Football vs. Watkins Memorial 9/6

Teays Valley uses the rain delay to wash away Watkins Memorial, and the Vikings take the win over the Warriors 35-12.

Teays Valley won the coin toss and kicked it off to Watkins to start the game. After going three and out, the Warriors punted to Teays Valley. They proceeded down the field and attempted a Max Spencer field goal, but Spencer missed it wide right. The ensuing Warrior drive ended in another boot to the Vikings, and they fed running back Spike Woods the ball for him to find the endzone, and Max Spencer put the ball through the uprights to take the early 7-0 lead. Regular starter for Watkins Memorial Drew Samsal was out with an injury, and the keys to the offense were handed to track athlete and normal wideout John Apel, and in the 3rd drive of the game for the Warriors Apel scrambled through the Viking defense and took the oblong baton 90 yards for the first black and gold touchdown to make the score 7-6, as Brayden Windnagel's point after attempt was no good. The second quarter scoring began when Brady Farmer rolled out and found Cavin Mcdowell for a 20-yard touchdown strike to make the score 13-3, and a Spencer goal made it 14-3. To swell the lead further, Tyler Tietz popped the ball out of the Warriors QB's grasp, and Gabe Zedlitz recovered in the blue paint, making the score 21-6, which they maintained into the half. Teays Valley only allowed one touchdown in the second half, when the Warriors connected on a Ricketts touchdown catch from Apel, but another missed PAT made the score 21-12. The Teays' final scores came in the fourth quarter when Farmer connected with big man Peter Graham and tight end Luke Burgett to round out the blue and golds 35-12 win over Watkins Memorial.

”We just hung in there and kept battling; we’re fighting a lot of injuries playing a lot of kids and playing a lot of young sophomores, and we just kept coming and kept playing, and we are happy with the way we were performing offensively and how we were able to run the ball at the end of the game and control the clock and score. I thought we played well with the exception of the long two runs, and again, going into next week, I think running the ball is important against Lancaster because we are going into OCC play and it’s a home game, so we’re really excited about that, and we are in an evenly matched team, so it should be a great game,” TV Coach Brian Cross said.

Leading the way for the Vikings was Spike Woods, who hauled the ball 21 times for 174 yards and also caught one catch for three yards. Carson Payne ran for 89 yards in 12 carries. Griffin Gray had one rush for 11 yards; Brady Farmer had 7 carries for 4 yards and was 7/13 with three touchdowns and 67 yards passing. Leading the receiving core was Peter Graham with 1 catch for a 35-yard touchdown, Cavin Mcdowell had 4 catches for 20 yards and a touchdown catch, and Luke Burgett had one catch for a 9-yard tightrope touchdown down the left side. On after-point attempts, Max Spencer was a perfect 5/5.

The Vikings will be at home next week to open OCC division play against the Lancaster Golden Gales at 7:00. I will be on hand with updates and scores throughout.

Teays Valley:

Spike Woods: 21 rushes, 174 yards, 1 rec for 3 yards, 1 TD

Carson Payne: 12 rushes, 89 yards

Griffin Gray: 1 rush, 11 yards,

Brady Farmer: 7/13, 67 yards passing, 3TD, 7 rushes, 4 yards

Peter Graham: 1 rec. 35 yards, 1 TD,

Cavin McDowell: 4 rec 20 yards, 1 TD

Luke Burgett: 1 rec, 9 yards, 1 TD

Max Spencer: 5/5 PATs

TVHS Football vs. Watkins Memorial Preview 9/5

The next opponent for the Teays Valley football team will be Watkins Memorial; the Warriors are coached by Darren Waters. Waters led the Gold and Black to an 8-4 record overall with a 2-2 record in league play in 2023 and will move up to Division I, Region 3 in 2024. The Warriors beat the Vikings last year 28-7 at home in Pataskala; Teays’ only score was on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Kole Nungester to Harrison Payne during the third quarter, but the Vikings shut out their host in the second half of last year's game.

Key players for Watkins will be John Apel, a track athlete, who will start at wideout and defensive back; Jimmy Bogle, a senior, will both protect the QB at O-line and go after the signal caller on the defensive line; Jaeden Ricketts, a junior wide receiver and defensive back; returning man under center is junior Drew Samsal, who will be a defensive back as well; Rocco Paschal at running back and linebacker; and Chris Flowers will sit on both O-line and D-line. Defensive lineman Brayden Waldren, running back and linebacker; Brayden Windnagel, another running back and defensive back; and Cooper Hunt will be at receiver and defensive back. Watkins Memorial's big loss for the 2024 season will be losing All-state running back Gerald Banks, who left for Pickerington North to finish high school.

Watkins can put up some touchdowns with returning quarterback Drew Samsal and receivers Jaeden Ricketts and John Apel but were hit by the graduation bug. The forte for the Warriors will be on the defensive side of the ball, as they returned Paschal as an inside linebacker. And moving to Division I, 16 of the 18 teams will make the postseason, and Watkins Memorial will be hoping to make a third consecutive trip since 2021. The big hurdle will be the non-league portion of the season. On the schedule this year for the Warriors will be Bishop Hartley in Week 4, who is a powerhouse in D-III.

TVHS football vs. Bloom-Carroll 8/30

Teays Valley capitalizes on three Bloom Carroll turnovers and walks the Bulldogs 28-10.

“I think the biggest thing was effort; our kids played with a tremendous amount of effort and a tremendous amount of desire, and they played with a lot of physicality, and we had a tough week at practice where we didn’t get outside one day, not one; we were inside every day due to the heat, and coming out here and holding them to 10 points is great because I think these guys have a really good offense,” TV Coach Brian Cross said.

Before the clock even started, Bloom Carroll committed two penalties, and the Viking defense stalled their drive after they took a timeout, leading to Treyton McKee's 25-yard field goal. Teays Valley got their first drive extended by a face mask and used it to cash in a Spike Woods 2-yard rush to take a 7-3 lead with six minutes in the first quarter. The game began to unravel for the Bulldogs when Ethan Thanthanavong scrambled out left, but his pass met the cutters of Tyler Mathews, and he took it to the endzone for a pick six for the Vikings, and Max Spencer put a goal through the uprights to take the 14-3 lead, and this would be the score that was taken into the locker rooms.

After halftime, Teays Valley received the ball and punted it back to BC. However, the purple and gold failed to make a field goal attempt and missed it wide left. The Vikings fumbled the ball on their second drive, but Bloom Carroll drove down the field, and a scramble out right of the pocket from Ethan Thanthanavong connected for a 43-yard strike to Michael Stevenson and put the ball in the endzone for the only time on the evening, narrowing the deficit to four points. The Vikings would respond with a touchdown pass of their own from Brady Farmer to Dai’Preece Weaver to make the score 20-10. On the subsequent drive, Bloom coughed up the ball for the final time, and Spike Woods made a house call for an 80-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, sealing the Vikings' 28-10 victory over their former MSL rivals. This victory marked the Vikings' first in Carroll since 2018.

“Brady (Farmer) did a good job at quarterback for us and is not an easy situation, and (Spike) Woods ran the ball tremendously well tonight, and our defense did a great job of holding them to 10 points and overall great performance offense, defense, and special teams, but we want to build on this game right because not very many people thought we were going to come out with the win tonight and we were able to get one, so we’re looking forward to the challenge to play Watkins next week,” Cross added.

Teays Valley football will be back on the gridiron next Friday, September 6th, for their first home game and Hall of Fame induction night against Watkins Memorial. I am working on some Golden Spotlights on all five inductees out next week, and I’ll be live at the game next week with updates as usual!

TV Football @ Bloom Carrol Preview

Next on tap for the Teays Valley High School football team will be their former MSL-Buckeye rival Bloom Carroll. The Bulldogs are led by third-year head coach Jeremy McKinney, who took over when former headman Wade Bartholomew took his headset to Olentangy to lead the Braves after the 2021 season. Last season Bloom was the MSL-Buckeye co-champion along with Logan Elm and Hamilton Township and made it to the OHSAA Division III regional finals. Bloom Carroll in consecutive seasons graduated a class that finished with a career record of 47-7 and 14-4 in the playoffs, and the Bulldogs have had a 24-5 record in the past two seasons and took last year's matchup against the Vikings convincingly with a 42-7 victory.

Names Vikings Nation should watch for on the offensive side returning for the Bulldogs on Friday will be senior QB Ethan Thanthanavong. In 2023, Thanthanavong was 103/154, completing 67% of his passes for 1,230 yards. Backing him up will be multiple-sport athlete and QB Park Truex, tight ends Ethan Hautala and Beau Sherman; Sherman will be a defensive back on the defensive, and running back Treyton McKee. The offensive linemen will be Braydon Spencer, Lance Abel, who will be on the defensive line, and Tristan McKeever. Receiving core will be Christian Ball, Lunden Dodds, James Donley, On the defense, Bloom will have returning defensive linemen Braydon Spencer, Lincoln Miller, and David Mullins; defensive end Michael Stevenson. Linebackers Warren Rawlins, Dylan Frye, and defensive backs Maddox Byler and Treyton McKee the running back. Handling the kicking and punting will be Aidan Sholtz. Key newcomers for the purple and gold are Rusty Hutchinson, Weston Coppess, and Evan Cardenas at wideout; Jude Blair, a running back transfer from Circleville; defensive line Carter Bearfield, Kelton Kirkpatrick, and Cole Thacker, who will also play on the offensive line; Zach Chambers and Deven Ash at defensive back; and linebacker Carson Curry.

TVHS Football vs Grove City 8/23

Grove City- It was a rough ride on the Greyhound for the Vikings as Grove City roughed up Teays Valley 42-7 in the first Friday night football game of the season.

The game began with a 40-yard kickoff return from Teays Valley’s Cavin McDowell. Still, the blue and gold would spoil the great opening field position and hand it over to the Greyhounds, and Grove City would take it the full length of the field and score on an Aiden McKinstry 7-yard rush to give the Dawgs the 7-0 early advantage. The Vikings' second drive was interrupted by an interception into the hands of GC’s Myles Hutchinson, which was converted into a Carson Welsh to Parker Toadvine connection to put the Dawgs up 14-0. Grove City scored on a Welsh to Steele touchdown pass right before the half to take a 28-0 advantage into the locker room.

In the second half, Teays Valley would only allow two Grove City touchdowns, one in the third and one in the fourth. Teays in the third quarter would get an 83-yard rushing touchdown from Spike Woods to get them on the board for the Viking's lone score on the evening. The host third was drawn up with a Carson Welsh pass to Owen Steele for a 14-yard touchdown to put them up 34-7, and a 72-yard rushing touchdown from Aiden McKinstry ended the board operator's night at 42-7 after a Zaiver Meyers point-after attempt.

Teays Valley leaders on the night were Spike Woods, who towed the rock 20 times for 146 yards and one touchdown and led the rushers; Peter Graham held the ball five times for 31 yards; and Carson Payne touched it once and got 2 yards. Brady Farmer had 20 attempts and completed half of them for 69 yards. Tight end Luke Burgett would lead the receiving core with three receptions and 27 yards; Carson Payne had two receptions and 25 yards. Weston Gray and Spike Woods both had a reception apiece for 6 yards, and Markus Mealy had one reception for 5 yards. Cavin McDowell would have 102 yards on kickoffs in four returns on the night, and Brandon Travis had one return for 2 yards on the lone Greyhound punt to the Vikings.

The Teays Valley football team will be back on the field Friday, August 30th from Carroll when they face off with the Bloom-Carroll Bulldogs for an old-fashioned MSL matchup, but this time as a non-league game. I will be live from the game, covering with updates as always!

TVHS Football vs. Grove City Preview-08/22

Football Friday is just one day away, and the Teays Valley football team will be traveling across county lines to face their neighbors off 104, the Greyhounds, or, for short, the Dawgs of Grove City. This will be the first regular season game as OCC members for the Vikings, but their first division game in the OCC Buckeye will be September 13th at home against Lancaster. From my research, TV coach Brian Cross coined the acronym DAWGS. When I spoke to Coach Brian Cross, he said he hoped this would become a rivalry due to our district's overlap and that they may even share boundaries at times. Brian Cross is the winningest football coach in Grove City High School football history and is a member of their hall of fame, as he won 114 games at the school and has an overall record of 223-130. His teams won 13 league titles and made 12 OHSAA playoff appearances. Cross coached the undefeated 1999 Grove City team, which was ranked #1 in the state and #8 nationally. Assistant Scott McIntire was the head coach for five years, and Kevin Gallagher was with the Dawgs staff as well. From the Grove City sidelines, they will be led by 3rd-year head coach Greg Waits, who is 12-11 overall as head coach. GC is looking to rebound from a 6-6 overall record and a 1-4 mark in the OCC last year.

The Dawgs will be replacing Gavin Dabo, Cale Snyder, and JJ King on the offensive side, and like the Vikings, the Dawgs will be replacing their quarterback. The 2023 starter, Matthew Papas, was a 2nd Team All-State selection, 1st Team All-Central District, and 1st Team OCC, and the only player last year to make the Columbus Dispatch Super 24 Team Nomination for Columbus Dispatch and USA Today Fall Athlete of the Year, is now at Ohio University. The Dawgs will look to Junior Carson Welsh, who is also a left-hander for the GC Baseball team, to be the new man under center, and at running back, they will have Aidan McKinstry, who will also be the kick returner. Other returning contributors are Nate Elliott, Parker Toadvine, who will see reps at kick returner, and Owen Steele. Others to watch for on Friday will be Landon Haskins, Vande Holser, and Jeremiah Washington. Teays will see a spread-tempo attack from the Dawgs on offense, and on defense, they see a 4-3 and show different coverages to the blue and gold offense. The defense is “physical and hard-hitting,” says Cross; the blue and crimson will have returners Ty Poole, Myles Hutchinson, Zac Merz, Gabe Adrovet, Delan Chadeya, and Geo Speakman. New players to keep an eye on are Ahmed Khalif and Eric Alvarez. Players who were lost to graduation are Jacob Slyh, Braden Young, Max Qualls, and Braden Hood.

Teays Valley and Grove City will kick off the 2024 campaign from Leasure Field on Friday, August 23, for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. I will be covering the TV Beat Report with updates throughout!

In the eighth installment of the TVHS Athletics Fall Sports Previews will be the Teays Valley High School football team led by second-year head coach Brian Cross. In 2024, the Vikings will join the OCC Buckeye, which also includes Pickerington Central, Lancaster, Newark, Reynoldsburg, Canal Winchester, and Groveport Madison. Following a lengthy search for a new conference, the Chieftains of Logan High School will also join the OCC alongside Teays Valley. And with the new conference, Vikings head coach Brian Cross believes it will start in the weight room. ”We have to get bigger and stronger, and our strength and conditioning coach (Josh) McDanel has done a heck of a job with the kids this summer; they were all dedicated. We put on weight, size, and strength, and that was the number one thing we knew we had to change going into the OCC to be competitive in every game we play, be physical in every game, and prove to ourselves that we belong in this conference.” Going into the 2024 campaign, the Blue and Gold will have up to 10 coaches on staff, which will be the only organizational change from 2023. The Vikings in 2023 only had 4 seniors, and this year they will have 23, so they will expect their seniors to step up and be leaders for the 2024 season. “We are going to need our seniors this year to show our younger players how we want to play football and how to prepare to play football.”

Returning for Teays Valley at running back is Spike Woods, who led the MSL in rushing in 2023 with over 900 yards and will be a key part of the Vikings offense along with tight end Luke Burgett as a starter. Cavin Mcdowell, a junior who plays corner, will also see snaps as a receiver. Brady Farmer will be the new man under center for the Vikings at quarterback. The key returning starter will be Ethan Schwalbauch, who will play the important fullback position. Another familiar last name to Viking Nation will be Carson Payne, who will take over the #23 jersey and play a wing position. The offensive line for Teays will be Tyler Tietz at left guard, Payton Conrad at left tackle, and Tristian Graham, a 3-year starter, who will snap the ball at center. Jayden Lunday will be the right guard, and Jaylen Ivey will fill out the line at right tackle. On the other side of the ball, on the defensive line, the blue and gold will have Tristen Graham and Tyler Tietz at the end. Gabe Zedlitz, Hayden Kellough, and Ethan Wallace will round out the front. The “Viking” position will be Tyler Mathews, the Gray brothers in Griffin, and Weston at the backer positions. Ethan Schwalbauch and Peter Graham will be inside. And defensive backs will be Cavin McDowell, Cavin Williams, and Spike Woods. Placekicker and soccer athlete Maxwell Spencer will return to kick the field goals and PATs this year and handle some punting duties. “This year our goal is to represent the community in which they will be very proud of us both on and off the field, and I think to do that, we need to play physically and compete in every game because we will play teams that are bigger than us, but we want to be competitive, and for us to be competitive, we need to execute and let them make the last mistake in games, so this Friday will be a big game for us playing Grove City; our boundaries are right up next to each other, and I think that can become a big rivalry. I coached there for 16 years with coach McIntire; he was the coach for five years, then coach Gallager coached there for three years, so it's a little special for us this game,” Cross added.

The Teays Valley football team will begin the season in Grove City when the Vikings take on the Dawgs for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff from Hoover Road. I will be on hand to cover for the TV Beat Report: The Viking! A preview of Grove City football will be out later this week!

TVHS Football vs. Central Crossing Scrimmage, 08/15/2024

Teays Valley football closed their preseason scrimmages against Central Crossing and shot down the visiting Comets with a 56-7 win. The Vikings allowed a single touchdown in the first quarter after turning the ball over on a mid-handed snap. “The thing I wanted to see was their physicality. We want to be a physical football team, and we want to execute and not make a lot of mistakes. We did physically hit, so we’re really proud of that, but we did make a lot of mistakes, a lot of quarterback-center exchanges, and those types of things will kill you in a football game, but I think we believe that our forte will be running the football. We got like four running backs that can carry the load and can be really physical, and our offensive line is all back from last year, so that is really important for us, and we stayed healthy in most scrimmages, and we didn’t lose anybody, so that is a major positive.” Said TV Coach Brian Cross The Comets flipped the field on the Vikings and pinned a rush into the end zone for their only score.

Teays Valleys running back Spike Woods saw the blue endzone three times on the evening to lead the rushers, Ethan Schawlbach, then freshman Koslowski, and Davis all saw gold in the scrimmage. “Spike is a good running back, Schwalbach is a good fullback, and Griff (Grey) is a good back. We can put Carson Payne running back and Schwalbach at the wing, and we have developed some depth, but we have to stay healthy,” said Cross. The presumed starting quarterback, Brady Farmer, had a rushing score and multiple 20-plus-yard passes to Schwalbach and Carson Payne. Along with freshman quarterback Peyton Mcelfresh, who also completed a pass to Payne.

Farmer played in two games last year when the starting quarterback went down with an injury against Hamilton and a half against Watkins Memorial, which the Vikings will play in week three for the Hall of Fame game. “Brady played two games for us last year; one game he did really well, and one game was against Hamilton Township, and they were pretty good and had a little bit of a rough outing. So far, he has done everything that we have asked him to do, and it was good to see him take off and show some speed. He threw the ball very well tonight, and we’re very happy to see that, and he’s a pretty big kid," TV Coach Brian Cross said. The Vikings had multiple takeaways on defense; one to highlight was Peter Graham's interception in front of the blue and gold sideline, and the three forced fumbles on Central Crossing put the game out of reach for the Comets for most of the game. “We are going into a league that is a lot different than what we played in last year: a lot more physical, a lot more athletic people, a lot more speed, so we have to adjust to all that stuff, and we have to stay healthy. So far, the kids have worked hard, have done what we asked them to do, and have done a really great job in the weight room, and I think physically, we are a lot stronger, even stronger than we were last year. That’s going to help us in the long run.” Cross added.

The Vikings football team will start their 2024 season on Hoover Road as they take on the Grove City Greyhounds at 7:00 p.m. I will be live from the game and will be for every TVHS football game in 2024!
